Idril
Idril was the daughter of Turgon, King of Gondolin, and a member of the royal house of the Noldor in Beleriand. She was known for her wisdom, foresight, and courage, and played a key role in the events surrounding the fall of Gondolin.
After the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, when hope for the Elves seemed lost, Idril remained in Gondolin as her father and the city prepared for possible threats. When the Vala Ulmo sent a warning of the city’s impending destruction through a messenger, Turgon permitted the messenger to remain in Gondolin, where he and Idril eventually married. She became the mother of Eärendil, who would later play a crucial role in the history of Middle-earth.
During the sack of Gondolin by the forces of Morgoth, Idril guided many survivors through a secret passage out of the city. Her foresight in planning these escape routes and her courage in leading refugees ensured the survival of key members of Gondolin’s population and preserved the royal line of Turgon.
Idril’s actions exemplify the resilience and prudence of the Noldor during the catastrophic events of the First Age and highlight her role in the continuity of important lineages that shaped the later history of Beleriand and Middle-earth.
