Halson Cleary was a hobbit farmer who lived in the Wistmead area over 250 years ago, at his farmhouse deep within the Dauntwood. A recluse by nature, he shunned his scornful neighbors in the area, only maintaining a friendship and regular correspondance with Ivy Redsmith. Halson Cleary vanished entirely following the Long Winter, a months-long freeze which gripped The Shire and led many hobbits to starve.

The general area, largely abandoned until recently, was often called "Eerie Acres", and was said in hobbit-lore to be haunted, perhaps even by the ghost of Mr. Cleary himself.
