Ceorl appears in the The Lord of the Rings, Book 3, Chapter 7, Helm's Deep. Bearing news of the catastrophic loss of the Fords of Isen, Ceorl, demoralized and tired, met King Théoden's entourage on the road, and was heartened to see the King ride to war once more. He joined in Théoden's procession to Helm's Deep, although it is unknown if he survived the battle there.
