Bryn is a prince of Dale, the second son of Brand and younger brother of Bard II. A descendant of Bard the Bowman and the ancient lords of Dale, Bryn belongs to the restored royal house that reclaimed the kingdom after the fall of Smaug. Bryn was born during the reign of his father, Brand, at a time when Dale prospered in alliance with Erebor and the Woodland Realm. As the younger son of the king, he stood behind his elder brother Bard in the line of succession but remains a member of the royal house descended from Girion and ultimately from Bródda.
He is growing up in a kingdom strengthened by trade and fortified by the legacy of dragon-slaying and renewal that defined his lineage. In 3019 of the Third Age, the War of the Ring reached the North. Easterling armies sent by Sauron attacked Dale and Erebor. Bryn's father Brand fell in battle beside King Dáin Ironfoot before the gates of the Lonely Mountain.
With his father slain and his brother succeeding as king, Bryn remains part of the royal house, though his relationship to his brother-turned-king has been somewhat turbulent.
