Beregond Belechest (Bold-stone Great-vision in Sindarin) was the 20th ruling Steward of Gondor, governing the realm from T.A. 2763 until his death in 2811.
Born as the third child of his father Beren Ithrondil in TA 2700, Beregond rose to prominence as a formidable commander. He was regarded as the greatest captain since the days of Boromir Charn. Before the spring of TA 2759 he repelled an incursion of the Corsairs of Umbar along Gondor's southern coasts. Soon after, he dispatched aid to Rohan when its people were attacked by a combined host of Dunlendings and Corsairs advancing up the River Isen.
Beregond succeeded his father Beren as Steward in TA 2763, at a time when Gondor had begun to regain some of its former strength. During his tenure the War of the Dwarves and Orcs (T.A. 2793–2799) was fought far to the north. Though only reports reached Gondor at first, Orcs fleeing the Battle of Nanduhirion later crossed Rohan and infested the White Mountains, leading to scattered fighting in many dales before they were destroyed.
After his death, Beregond was succeeded by his son Belecthor II Orndil in TA 2811.
