For many generations the Dúnedain of Cardolan buried their dead within the Downs, until the Great Plague destroyed the last vestiges of Cardolan, and spirits from Angmar claimed the barrows.

For years beyond memory it has been a forbidding place, which Men and hobbits alike have shunned. Hobbit-tales tell that the trees are aware and can move of their own accord.
