Description
Wulf was the son of the Dunlending Lord Freca, and a usurper to the Kingship of Rohan.
Born in his father's collection of lands about the River Adorn, Wulf, although of Rohan, had much Dunlendish blood in his veins, like his father Freca. Usually ignorant of his summons to the King's councils, Freca arrived in Edoras one day in T.A. 2754, at one such council held in the Golden Hall of Meduseld. Freca proposed the marriage of Wulf to the daughter of Helm, a proposition that infuriated the King. Insults and rage were exchanged between the two, and during the brawl that occured outside the Golden Hall after the council, Helm struck Freca with a single blow so hard that the latter was killed. Helm then banished Freca's people from the kingdom, declaring them enemies of Rohan.
This was the start of the animosity between the Rohirrim and the Dunlendings that would last for centuries. Wulf and his kin fled to Dunland, and would soon lead a coalition of Easterlings, Corsairs of Umbar, and the various Dunlending tribes four years later to take over Rohan and gain revenge for the death of his father. Wulf succeeded in claiming Edoras for his own, slaying the King's eldest son and heir Haleth, and sitting upon the Throne of Meduseld.
In T.A. 2759, espite bringing an end to the First Line of Eorl with the deaths of King Helm and his son Prince Háma at Helm's Deep, Wulf's position as ruler of the Riddermark would prove to be brief and tenuous. Thus it was that Helm's nephew, Fréaláf Hildeson, secretly entered Meduseld with a small band of warriors and finally slew Wulf himself, bringing an end to Freca's line, and that of Dunlending rule in Rohan.
Nevertheless, the hill-tribes of Dunland remain bitter still at the deaths of Freca and Wulf, and long to once again war with the Rohirrim, now backed by the wizard Saruman. Isengard and Dunland's main staging camp in their preparation for the War against Rohan would be situated in an enbankment known now as Wulf's Cleft.
