Lore

Water Spirits are called by Gultháva, Maiden of the Gladden during her encounter within the instance the Depths of Kidzul-kâlah in the Vales of Anduin. In appearance they resemble the Grims, in that they are floating orbs embodying elemental forces (in this case water). It is possible that the Water Spirits are beings of the same order, lesser Maiar that serve more powerful creatures of nature such as River-maids. However, while the Grims have been turned to evil, the Water Spirits are aligned with the forces of good and only attack adventurers when answering Gultháva's summons.

Background

In The Silmarillion and other works, J.R.R. Tolkien references spirits of water and the sea who were servants of Ulmo, the Lord of Waters. This is possibly the inspiration for the lesser water spirits of Kidzul-kâlah.
