Kine of Araw
The Kine of Araw were a wild breed of great oxen that roamed the plains of Rhûn near the Sea of Rhûn. They were known for their exceptional strength and untamed nature, surpassing any other cattle in Middle-earth.
These beasts became renowned through the deeds of Vorondil, called the Hunter, forefather of the Ruling Stewards of Gondor. Vorondil crafted the Great Horn of Gondor from one of these oxen, and this horn was thereafter borne by the heir of the Steward's line. The final descendant to carry it was Boromir, who saw the horn cloven in two when he fought Orcs at Amon Hen.
According to tradition, the Kine were descended from the herds of Oromë, the Huntsman among the Valar. Their name comes from Araw, the Sindarin form of Orome's name.
