Welcome and thanks

Filling in the Creature pages with Lore Master scans is always a big chore. Your efforts are quite welcome!

Tip on "spelling" errors

Tip: When you use a Template (or any Wiki-link) on a page (Scrub Badger, which you just edited, for example), and that Template has an error in it -- typically a mis-spelling, it will show up on the page in "red," which typically indicates "not found," i.e. a spelling error in the name of the Template. In this case you had "tooltips" instead of "tooltip" -- which is an error I make all the time :). This will show up in a Preview as well as with a Save. (It also shows up in red in the "Templates used on this page" listing at the bottom of the page while you are editing it. (You may have to click on the triangle to expand the listing.)

Another Tip, if you go to the "View History" for that page, and click on "compare selected revisions" (in this case, the last two), you will see, at the top of the page, the changes highlighed -- the old in Yellow on the left, and the new in Blue on the right.

Removing "Stub" tags

  • Another Tip: Many of the Creature pages you are editing (such as Fanged-stalker) will likely have "{{Stub/Mob}}" or {{Stub/Creature}} Article Management Tags (see also Article Management Tags/Display) at the top of the page to flag them as needing additional work. Work, which is typically the Lore Master "specs" which you are adding! Consequently, when you add the missing information, feel free to remove the Stub tag from the top of the page -- which removes the banner, and also removes the article from Category:Stubs/Mob or Category:Stubs/Creature respectively.
  • This particular page brings up another "teaching point." When is a "critter" a Creature and when is it a Mob? (And I just noticed that this explanation is "buried" on the Boilerplate:Creature page - sigh.)
  • Use "Mobs" when referring to enemies INSIDE an instance
  • Use "Creatures" when referring to enemies OUTSIDE an instance
Which means that, "technically," according to our standards, this page should have been tagged with a {{Stub/Creature}} tag, NOT a {{Stub/Mob}} tag - oops.

Hello

Thank you for your helpful tips. I'm still pretty new to this HTML stuff (or whatever the code is), so these tips are very useful. One of the things I've noticed while filling in the "specs" is that there seems to be two different charts for them. Sometimes, I see a drop down menu (mostly on low level creatures in the starter areas), but most of the time I see the chart that you see for most of the creatures. I'm probably not explaining myself very well, but I was wondering if there was a big difference between the two charts. Is it just an old chart that hasn't been updated or is it something else?

The code we use is called wiki markup. It has a lot in common with html, but is not exactly the same. You seem to be figuring things out all right, but there are some resources around if you ever want to look things up. See Wikipedia's Wiki Markup help document, for example. And of course if you have questions you're always welcome to ask, as well.
I do know exactly what you're talking about with the two different formats of creature information. Another editor was experimenting with a different way to present the page, but we never came to a definite conclusion about it and so it's only been used on some of the lower-level creature pages, as you noticed. For now it's safe to keep using the template you've been filling in. Thanks for your Lore-master work! -- Elinnea (talk) 21:56, 7 December 2013 (UTC)
Also make certain that you familiarize yourself with our Help page. It has undergone a great deal of revision in recent months, (hopefully for the better!). The center blue section especially is oriented towards "Information for editors, new and old." Like the entire Wiki, it is still a work in progress, so if you find things confusing or not explained -- don't hesitate to put a comment on the appropriate Talk page.
  • Which brings up another Tip: In the left column, you will see a link: "Recent discussions." That page is "dynamic," i.e. the MediaWiki engine updates it any time a change is made to a talk page. It's an easy way to "stay current."
I would add one comment to Elinnea's -- MediaWiki recognizes BOTH Wiki-Markup AND many HTML commands, including CSS. Consequently, when you look at a page, you will find BOTH on many pages. And, as you become more adept and begin playing with Tables, you will discover that "CSS is your friend."
