Thorondor was the Lord of the Great Eagles of Beleriand and a mighty ally in the War of Wrath, the 42-year-long conflict between the Host of Valinor and the forces of Morgoth. This final war of the Wars of Beleriand brought about the end of the First Age.
Thorondor commanded the largest and most powerful eagles of Middle-earth, whose keen sight and great strength allowed them to act as scouts, messengers, and warriors in the war. He and his eagles played a crucial role in supporting the Host of Valinor, attacking Morgoth’s forces from the air, disrupting enemy formations, and aiding key figures such as Eönwë and Eärendil.
During the War of Wrath, the combined forces of the Valar, Edain, and the Great Eagles, under Thorondor’s leadership, overwhelmed Morgoth’s armies, destroying his fortresses and strongholds across Beleriand. The aerial might of Thorondor and his eagles provided strategic advantages, including reconnaissance and rapid intervention in critical battles.
The war ultimately culminated in the capture of Morgoth and his expulsion from Arda for all time. Thorondor’s contributions ensured the victory of the Free Peoples and facilitated the survival of key figures who would shape the history of Middle-earth after the First Age.
