The Longbeards believed that Durin would return seven times, and each time he will again be named Durin and reign as King. According to the legend recorded in the Red Book, these returns would be through an heir born into his line, an individual held to be Durin reborn, with same appearance, character and name

The Line
- Durin I, also known as Durin the Deathless, eldest of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves, after whom many other dwarves, especially the Longbeards, are named
- Durin II, who offered the Zhélruka a home in Gundabad
- Durin III, who ruled in Khazad-dûm when Sauron laid waste to Eregion
- Durin IV, king of the Longbeards during the War of the Last Alliance, found at Echad-in-Edhil in Mordor Besieged
- Durin V, who fought the dragon Thorog
- Durin VI, king of the Longbeards in Moria just before its fall. The Balrog, Durin's Bane, is named for him
- Durin VII, also known as Durin Stonehelmson, the current prince of the Longbeards and son of King Thorin III Stonehelm
- The son of Hermáth Stormhammer and father of Hersegg
