New Quests Section
I commented this part out tonight because it was causing the page not to load for users not signed in or for visitors without an account. It's a neat functionality to have (and a shame that it's buried all the way at the end of this page), but I'm not sure what to do with it at the moment. Sethladan 00:09, 8 December 2010 (EST)
Quest pictures
I think each quest should get a picture at the top, like many locations have. It's probably not necessary for every single quest in the game, but I think there should at least be an option to build in a single image into the quest pages if so desired. Thoughts? --Varghedin (talk) 16:27, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
- Pretty sure this was discussed along with images on category pages. Both were voted against. For quests, having an image on top messes with the page layout and feels extremely out of place as it pushes the infoboxes down and out of alignment. Plus if there were images, they should go into the quest hints box which still don't really fit but that's where I would have voted to put them. Again, this was discussed before and the majority decided to not include images. I am definitely in line with that decision myself. Rogue (talk) 17:10, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
- I remember a category image discussion, and I support no images for categories. I haven't seen one for quests, though. Do you have a link to that discussion? I don't see mention of images in quests in any of Lotro-Wiki.com talk:Quests or Help talk:Quests or Lotro-Wiki.com talk:Images or Help talk:Images. --Varghedin (talk) 18:50, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
- I thought it was discussed alongside the category images in Discord - but doing a search has not prevailed an answer for you. We are discussing it in our admin channel in discord. I've asked them to post their opinions on it here as I see some people have chimed in there. Rogue (talk) 21:45, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
- I agree that “having an image on top messes with the page layout and feels extremely out of place as it pushes the infoboxes down”, I'm not a fan. It looks ok in the side panel like this, but don't really see the need. --Garlo (talk) 00:14, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
- In my opinion, images on top of quest pages are distracting, pushing the information down as Garlo pointed out. If we decide to allow images on quest pages, I would like to see them only within the questbox template (in the Walkthrough & Notes section) or maybe on the right hand side of the quest page, beneath the quest infobox. --Tharondir (talk) 05:15, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
- Garlo, that link you sent with the image in the text box looks good to me. That would ensure the boxes aren't pushed down. The bad thing about the walkthrough and notes box is that it's hidden until you click it which defeats the point, and the point of it is to have a graphic representation of the quest, not just a written one, which I know personally can have a profound effect of recognition for people with dyslexia. It's similar to how TV episodes are usually represented not just with a name and blurb but with an image on sites like IMBD: [1]. I'm not talking about a gallery of images, just a single image per quest is enough to connect a quest name with an 'event' which is very helpful for many people. --Varghedin (talk) 05:24, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
- I don't think the quests should have header images. Do you have some sources for the claims? First of all, sites like imdb are using images that were vreated for the purpose of represnting the movies/shows. They contain a lot of information so you can just glance on the image and see if you want to read more or not. Thay contain the name of the show, main character and from the image you usually can see on first sight what kind of movie/show it is (action, animated, romance, etc...). I do not think the images on quest pages would manage to fill this purpose. Moreover i opened the link you posted, i am mobile atm but also tried to view the desktop version. On both the image was quite small compared to those header images on quest pages. I would vote against images on quest pages unless they are needed for the walktrough. --Drono (talk) 08:52, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
- You're right that the IMDB images are smaller than the header images (600 px width). If we use infobox images rather than header images, those will be smaller. Examples that's more relevant than IMDB - here are quest pages on other wikis using an image in the quest infobox: [2] and [3]. If you're asking how I know a picture can make a difference is that my brother is dyslexic and growing up with him we had much better effect in learning if his homework had visual aids. It's easier to recognize an image than just text - I think that's a general rule for human recognition and memory, but it is stronger in those who struggle with reading. An image can make a big difference with association. --Varghedin (talk) 21:18, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
- Is there a decision in this case? --Varghedin (talk) 14:33, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
- There is a general consensus among the Administration team that images at the top of the page are not necessary nor do they fit within the quest page layout - no to every quest page having an image. Also images inside the Walkthrough section are ok if they are essential to finding the location or object, but generally not every quest walkthrough needs one either. Rogue (talk) 23:35, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
- I see. That's very disappointing. Thanks for your reply. --Varghedin (talk) 06:24, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

- I ask that this matter be discussed in discord where it belongs and that you remove your previous message here. We need you to stop editing quests with images as you are going against the vote ofthe other admins. Come join us and talk. Rogue (talk) 04:10, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
- I tried to find that chat earlier but I could not figure it out. Could I get an instruction for how to get there?--Varghedin (talk) 10:20, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks Varghedin for doing that. Inside our discord server under Admin's Corner you should now see a channel. Let me know in my talk page if you need further help! Rogue (talk) 19:59, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
