Master of Lake-town is the title borne by the chief leader of Lake-town (previously Esgaroth), the town of Men built upon the waters of the Long Lake in the north of Middle-earth. The Master serves as the principal authority among the Lake-men and presides over the affairs of the settlement, guiding its trade, administration, and relations with neighboring lands.

Unlike hereditary titles such as the King of Dale, the Master of Lake-town is traditionally chosen from among the leading citizens of the town. According to local custom, the office is filled by election or agreement among the elders and influential merchants of Esgaroth, and the position is typically held by one regarded as experienced in commerce and governance. Because Lake-town stands at the centre of trade along the River Running and the Long Lake, the Master’s authority is closely connected with the regulation of markets, trade-guilds, and the economic life of the settlement.

The Master presides in the great hall of the town and oversees the work of the town’s officials, including the captains of the guard and the officers responsible for trade and shipping. While the office carries considerable influence within Lake-town, much of that authority depends upon the support of the town’s merchants and councillors. The Master therefore acts not only as ruler but also as spokesman and negotiator for the Lake-men.

During the Third Age, the Master of Lake-town played a prominent role in the events surrounding the Quest of Erebor. When Thorin II Oakenshield and his companions arrived in Esgaroth in T.A. 2941, they were received in the Master's hall. The announcement that the heir of the King under the Mountain had returned stirs great excitement among the townsfolk, though the Master himself regarded the claim with skepticism. Nevertheless, he publicly supported the expedition, hoping that the restoration of Erebor would bring prosperity to the trade routes that passed through Lake-town.

When the dragon Smaug descended upon the town soon afterward, the Master proved unequal to the crisis and fled the burning settlement in his boat. In the chaos of the attack, leadership fell instead to the defenders of the town, and the dragon was ultimately slain. After the destruction of Lake-town, the survivors established temporary camps along the western shores of the Long Lake while preparations were made to rebuild the settlement.

In the years following these events, the leadership of Lake-town changed. The town was rebuilt and its prosperity restored as trade once again flowed along the River Running between Erebor, Dale, and the lands to the south. Over time the office of Master continued to serve as the chief civic authority of the Lake-men, overseeing the growth and renewal of the settlement.

By the end of the War of the Ring the office is held by Dagrun, formerly the Captain of the Market in Lake-town. Chosen after the death of the previous Master, she is recognized for her calm leadership and service to the town during a time of crisis. Under her authority, Lake-town continues its recovery and maintains its role as a key centre of trade and cooperation among the northern peoples.
