Cave-claws are small, rodent-like creatures that dwell in caves, mines, and the deep subterranean places of Middle-earth. Though simple beasts rather than creatures of Ancient Evil, they are widely disliked by the Dwarves, whose tunnels and halls they infest in great numbers. These creatures gnaw constantly at stone and roots alike, echoing Gandalf’s grim observations that many things live unseen in the deep places of the world.

Individually, a cave-claw poses little threat, relying more on intimidation than outright violence. They often announce their presence with snarls or sharp cries, warning intruders away from their territory. When pressed, they are quick to attack, snapping and clawing before retreating to burrow into the ground, where they attempt to evade retaliation. While a lone cave-claw is easily driven off, swarms can overwhelm the unwary through sheer persistence.

Cave-claws are most commonly found beneath the mountains and in long-abandoned tunnels, particularly in Ered Luin, the Trollshaws, the Isendeep Mine, and the depths of Arador's End in the Ettenmoors. Their species shows notable variation, with offshoots including the larger, heavily armored Deep-claws of Moria and the massive, vicious Blade-beaks of Angmar. Together, these creatures serve as a reminder that even the lesser beasts of the deep can become dangerous when left unchecked.

Background

Cave-claws do not appear in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. They were created for The Lord of the Rings Online, likely inspired by Gandalf’s cryptic remarks about nameless creatures gnawing at the roots of the world.
