Amount of Icons

We do not *really* need +20 of the same icons, do we? If nobody stops me, I will remove them all and will link to File:Lore-master Talisman-icon.png instead. --Ravanel 12:13, 19 March 2011 (EDT)

I do not see a problem with using one icon for multiple items, so long as they all use the same looking icon. The only problem I see with this concept, if you decide to do it with other items, is that if an item is crafted and has a critical success item in the recipe this will not work because the template uses the exact name of the crit item and pulls the icon for it. Hope this makes sense to you. Rogue 14:02, 19 March 2011 (EDT)
It's the same for LOTS of icons, I was also wondering how to reduce the amount of icons... What would be the best way? File redirects to the one to keep? With weapon or armour icons, could have some number and quality naming, ex.:
  • "One-handed Hammer 1 (common)"
  • "One-handed Hammer 1 (uncommon)"
  • "One-handed Hammer 1 (rare)"
  • "One-handed Hammer 1 (incomparable)"
  • "One-handed Hammer 2 (uncommon)"
  • "One-handed Hammer 2 (rare)"
  • "One-handed Hammer 2 (incomparable)"

Hmmm, doesn't seem possible to create a file redirect directly from a file red link... --Goingbald 14:45, 19 March 2011 (EDT)
I don't really know what you mean Rogue, but I've always tried to keep as far away as possible from items. I'll totally leave this up to you guys. But sounds like Goingbald has a good idea there with those weapons. They indeed always have the same icon. In my case, I just saw this category and thought it takes unnecessary wiki space to upload them all. There are some more cosmetic pets with Talismans missing, so I ran into it. Will use File:Lore-master Talisman-icon.png there directly, without redirects. I'll just fix it here for the Talisman icon now I sort of have your permission. ^^ --Ravanel 22:10, 19 March 2011 (EDT)
Same argument as before, with the crafting template you would have to have the exact name of that item. But perhaps you could redirect the named file to the common named file.. not sure how that would work. Rogue 22:21, 19 March 2011 (EDT)
Jumping in here, sorry -- with the Jeweller talisman recipes, there is no critical success result, so in this case I think that using one main icon for the multiple items would work. Of course, if they ever changed that, it could get more complicated. If no one else beats me to it, I have a couple multi-output Jeweller talisman recipes to add - unless there's a problem, I'll follow your lead and use "Lore-master Talisman-icon" in the recipes. Good idea, by the way.
As far as weapons go, I've thought that it would be neater to have fewer icons since so many are the same. They did get a little tricky with some of the Malledhrim woodworker icons, though - they have different icons for the different multi-output items from the same recipe. However, if we followed Goingbald's numbering suggestion, for example, Golden Host Staff of Striking could use "Staff 1 (rare)" and Golden Host Staff of Warding could use "Staff 2 (rare)". Uploading the file seems still necessary before being able to move it, creating the redirect, but we'll need to be cautious, if the target file name already exists, it'll be Deleted to make way for move, as observed with my experiment with the 5 icons of Captain's Battle Tonics --> saving locally the icon to keep for all redirects would be wise, then reupload it if the last move had the wrong icon.
So uploads could still be going, and redirections would happen later in the background, when epuration is needed, by icon category; some icons would still be there more than once if in different categories (ex.: a 1h hammer icon being same as a 2h hammer, but they'd be there both, in each category). Sounds good to proceed this way? :) --Goingbald 03:35, 20 March 2011 (EDT)
However you guys can make it work sounds good to me. If you break something, just fix it! Rogue 13:03, 20 March 2011 (EDT)

Update: Moved this section to here.

I plan on uploading some icons with new names to start implementing this. Rogue 17:11, 7 April 2011 (EDT)

Wish-list (or an early X-mas list)

While quickly adding the table for sub-categories and generic icons at the this page I came to wonder about some of the category names. Not so much about those in the table, but some others. Some are not really descriptive, some categories should be reorganized, and some are ... questionable. Thus:

  • Somebody with an interest for icons combined with organizational skill (preferably obsessive) walks over the categories and re-evaluates them based on content and if they can justify their existence, and how they are named.

Quest Icons -- I understand what the category is for, but honestly, many many quest items (items used while the quest is open, such as gather X and carry it to NPC Z) are generic and exists in other categories. But a new editor, and also myself, often struggle to find that generic icon in a category somewhere else. It is understandable why editors rather create a new icon than spend time finding an existing. Thus:

  • Somebody with an interest and experience in quests and quest-items create a table of generic icons at the Quest Icons page, no matter in which category-space those generic icons exist. Perhaps group at a very high levels, such as containers, organic items, inorganic items, scrolls&letters, etc.

Feel free to add ideas. The purpose for this post is to make life easier for us editors in he first hand.

Reformat Icon Tables

What do you guys think about reformatting the tables that list the generic icons such that the quality is by column and the numbered variety went down the rows? It would look like this - User:Gaerlin/Sandbox/NewIconTables --Gaerlin (talk) 00:10, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

I like the fact it uses less space. I have done a lot of work on icons lately, and editing to line up things and to add headings is a fine art. I think this looks easier as at least you don't need to worry about adding headings every 4 items. Still a little tricky with alts but that is the nature of the beast. It has my vote Noddi (talk) 12:24, 24 July 2017 (UTC)
No strong feelings either way over here (but I'm definitely too lazy to go update all the icon talk pages!). I do wonder what it will look like for effect icons that have multiple tiers, such as Category:Frost Effect Icons or Category:Healing Effect Icons. Might look messy. --Ravanel (talk) 13:01, 27 July 2017 (UTC)
