Borin (Northern for Borer) was a lord of Durin's Folk. He was the younger son of King Náin II and brother to Dáin I.[1]

Biography

Born in TA 2450 in the Realm of Grárik in the Ered Mithrin, Borin would become a proud Longbeard prince, and would father a son, Farin, in that time.[1]

A tale known among historians tells of a fierce encounter deep within The Glimmerdeep between Borin and the dragon Etterfang Foulmaw, in which Borin seriously wounded the dragon with his mace, causing her to flee deeper into the mountains. The scars of their battle are said to still remain in the old mines.

In TA 2589 however, Borin and Farin were forced to escape from the destruction of Grárik, in which his brother and nephew Frór were slain. Borin would follow his eldest nephew Thrór to the renewed Kingdom under the Mountain at Erebor, and would live the rest of his life in presumably prosperous circumstances, passing away in TA 2711, aged 261.[2]

Borin's line would continue through his son Farin, his grandsons Fundin and Gróin, his great-grandsons Balin, Dwalin, Óin and Glóin of Thorin's Company, and his great-great grandson Gimli of the Company of the Ring.[1]
