Battle of Tumhalad
The Battle of Tumhalad was a significant, though relatively lesser-known, engagement during the Wars of Beleriand. The battle took place on the wide, open plains of northern Beleriand, where forces of Morgoth confronted the armies of the Noldor. Despite the efforts of the defenders, the conflict ended decisively in favor of Morgoth’s forces.
The victory had severe consequences for the Noldor, as it resulted in the death of Orodreth, the cousin of the High King Turgon of Gondolin. His loss weakened the leadership of the Noldorin forces in the region and undermined their ability to resist subsequent incursions by Morgoth’s armies. This defeat also directly contributed to the destabilization of Nargothrond, setting the stage for its eventual Fall of Nargothrond.
Though smaller in scale compared to other engagements in the Wars of Beleriand, this battle demonstrated Morgoth’s ability to exploit tactical advantages and to strike at key leaders of the Noldor, accelerating the decline of their strongholds in the north. Its outcome had lasting repercussions for the power dynamics among the Elves and reshaped the strategic landscape of Beleriand during this turbulent period.
