King Balin V was the King of Durin's Folk and King of Khazad-dûm some time during the Third Age. He was the descendant of Durin the Deathless and the ancestor of Durin VI, and as such, all later Longbeard kings. Little is known regarding his reign, except that King Balin saw a contentious period between Longbeards and the Zhélruka regarding the ownership of the Grey Mountains, to which both had a claim.
Thus, it was King Balin V that convened the Fifth Great Moot of the Dwarves to send the matter to arbitration. As Mount Gundabad was held by the orcs at this time however, the traditional setting of Ibdêkh-buzru hosted only the start and finish of the Moot. The seven kings of the Moot voted in favour of the Zhélruka as the rightful rulers of the Ered Mithrin, the four kings of the east outweighing the three of the west. King Balin was forced to accept the declaration, and thus the matter was resolved. Today many of the Zhélruka refer to the proclamation of the Fifth Dwarrowmoot to justify their occupation of the Grey Mountains.
Balin V is remembered through many statues that depict him, most notably the one amongst the statues of the seven kings in the chamber of Durûz-mazal in Thikil-gundu, the Steel-keep, which memorializes the Fifth Dwarrowmoot.
