Aranarth (Sindarin for Noble-king) was the son of King Arvedui of Arthedain and Fíriel, daughter of King Ondoher Manardil of Gondor. After the Fall of Fornost and the death of his father in the Ice Bay of Forochel, Aranarth became the first Chieftain of the Dúnedain. Though he was descended from both Isildur and Anárion and the crown was his by right, he did not claim his kingship as he kingdom had been destroyed. His people were from then on called the Rangers of the North, and he would be the ancestor of Aragorn.

Aranarth joined King Eärnur of Gondor in the Battle of Fornost when the Witch-king was driven out and the forces of Angmar were destroyed, but Fornost had become a ruin and could not be rebuilt.
