Bestowal dialogue

'Our first destination will be the town of Herne, a village of farmers and traders that grew up at a crossing of the ways to the north-west of here, where the Greenway coming south meets with the road coming north out of Enedwaith. When last I came this way, the tavern at Herne was a pleasant enough place, although it could not truly compete with the Prancing Pony for entertainment and company. Crossway House it was called, a two-story building near the south gate.

'Let us be off.'

Background

The town of Herne lies at the cross-road north-west of Tharbad, and the inn there is a popular destination for travellers on the Old South Road.

Objective 1

  • Find the south-east entrance of the town Herne, along the road north-west of Tharbad

Herne is located north-west of Tharbad, along the Old South Road.

Meneldir told you that when he last came this way, the inn at the cross-road was a pleasant house of refreshment for travellers, and should be still.

Meneldir: 'Our first destination will be the town of Herne, a village of farmers and traders that grew up at a crossing of the ways to the north-west of here, where the Greenway coming south meets with the road coming north out of Enedwaith.'
Boromir: 'These tavern names are so quaint. Crossway House? Prancing Pony? None of them will compare to the Mûmak and Keep of my city.'
Egfrith: 'To Herne then! Am I saying that correctly?'
The air is silent, the wind still. Where are the guards?

Objective 2

Something is not right in the town of Herne.

Perhaps one of the residents of the town can explain what has happened.

Bledri: 'I don't want any trouble! Can you just leave me alone?'
The man stares at you with suspicious eyes and hurries for his home

Objective 3

Something is not right in the town of Herne.

Perhaps one of the residents of the town can explain what has happened.

Aldyth: 'You had better leave, stranger. This is a bad time to pass through Herne! Trust me when I tell you this!'
Like her neighbour, the woman glares at you and hurries home

Objective 4

Crossway House, the inn at the cross-road, is near the southern road that passes through Herne.

Something happened at Herne that has upset the townspeople. Perhaps answers await inside Crossway House, the inn at the cross-road.

The inside of the inn is dark and quiet
Meneldir: 'An ill feeling has settled upon the whole town. It was not like this when last I came this way.'
Boromir: 'Are all taverns in the north so... quiet?'
Egfrith: 'There is not much cheer to be found here, it seems.'

Objective 5

  • Talk to Maddoc inside Crossway House

Maddoc, the innkeeper of Crossway House, stands behind the counter.

Maddoc: 'You and your friends might want to keep walking, stranger. Herne is not the place it once was, and you will not find welcome here.'
You ask the innkeeper what happened to the town, and he frowns, shaking his head.
'Four nights ago, something... evil... passed through the centre of Herne. No one knows exactly what it might have been, but every night since a terrible fear has seized the town. Old man Aberthol says he saw something that first night, but... I don't know. He was an adventurer in his younger days, but he has such a reputation for tale-spinning that is has always been hard to tell the truths from the falsehoods in his stories.
'But something happened that night, and the town ha snot been the same ever since. You had best be moving on, you and your friends, before the dark comes again.'

Objective 6

  • Talk to Boromir inside Crossway House

Boromir stands within Crossway House.

Meneldir: 'Some evil passed through Herne, but the ill feeling remained behind? What does it mean?'
Egfrith: 'If this man speaks true, it sounds as if some evil came to Herne... but what could it have been?'
Boromir: 'I have seen something like this before, <name>. Well, I say "seen", but I did not see it; say instead I felt it, something dark and evil; it filled man and horse with dread. We stood in defence of the river at Osgiliath when this presence came upon us, and even the boldest among us were seized by a terrible fear. We cast down the bridge behind us, and only a few of us escaped.
'I have never felt a fear like that before, <name>. Some of my men claimed they saw the figure from which the terror spread... but I do not know if I believe it. Might that evil have come north from Gondor, somehow? I did feel as if I were being watched at times as I rode through the empty lands... or were they not as empty as they appeared?
'I should speak with the old man the innkeeper mentioned. If his story matches those of my soldiers... that will tell me something of the evil that came to Herne.'

Objective 7

  • Talk to Maddoc inside Crossway House

Maddoc, the innkeeper of Crossway House, stands behind the counter.

Maddoc clears his throat
Maddoc: 'I hope you won't use old Aberthol too harshly. He is something of a peculiar fellow, but despite his strangeness most of Herne's folk are quite fond of him... and he has always brought his custom to Crossway House, which I appreciate.
'Let me give you a mug of his favourite spiced beer. It may loosen his tongue. To be truthful, that is not usually a problem for our Aberthol, but he might not want to speak about whatever happened to him that night. The beer may make him more willing to talk with you.'

Objective 8

Meneldir stands inside Crossway House.

Maddoc: 'I hope Aberthol will speak with you, and perhaps you can ease his mind.'
Boromir: 'I should speak with this old man and learn what he encountered.'
Egfrith: 'Some evil came to Herne. Is it the same as that encountered by Boromir in Gondor?'
Maddoc gives you a mug of beer that smells strongly of cinnamon
Meneldir: 'You go with Boromir and Egfrith to speak with this man, <name>. I will ask around Herne to see what else I can learn about what happened here.'

Objective 9

  • Talk to Aberthol inside his home in the northern part of Herne

Aberthol lives in the northern part of Herne.

Maddoc told you something happened to Aberthol four nights ago, and the old man may speak to you about it, if you loosen his lips with a mug of his favourite spiced beer.

Maddoc tells you how to find Aberthol's home in the northern part of Herne
Egfrith: 'I will go with you and Boromir to speak with this man.'
Boromir: 'I must speak with this man and learn what befell him.'
Aberthol: 'Why have you come to bother me? I speak to no one!
'Not since...'

Objective 10

  • Set the mug of spiced beer on Aberthol's table

A mug of spiced beer, set on his table, may encourage Aberthol to tell you what happened to him.

Aberthol: 'I speak to no one!'
Aberthol eyes you nervously

Objective 11

  • Talk to Aberthol inside his home

Aberthol is inside his home, considering you, your companions, and the mug of spiced beer you brought him.

Aberthol grins. 'Now that's different,' he says
Aberthol: 'I have not had any visitors in quite some time. What brings you to my home? You... you want to hear about... about the crawling darkness?'
Aberthol shakes in his chair, and then takes a bracing gulp form the mug of beer.
'Maybe I had better know your names. Who are these companions you bring with you?'

Objective 12

  • Introduce Boromir to Aberthol
  • Introduce Egfrith to Aberthol

Aberthol waits for you to introduce him to your companions.

Aberthol: 'Maybe I had better know the names of your companions.'
You call for Boromir and Egfrith to join you

Objective 13

  • Talk to Aberthol inside his home

Aberthol, apparently awestruck by his visitors, is now willing to tell you his story.

Aberthol: 'Boromir, you say? Surely you are not the same Boromir who is the son of the Steward of Gondor? Some twenty years ago I travelled in the south-lands, adventuring, you know, and I had the privilege of meeting the Steward. I remember his sons, both of lordly mien; you do bear a resemblance to the elder of the two! But you travel now in secret, it seems. I will say not more of it. A Guard of the Citadel, if not its Captain, in my own home! I can hardly believe it.
'And Egfrith, a proud woman of Rohan! In the days of my youth, I rode across the Riddermark at joyful gallop. Is Théoden still King of Rohan? It was a beautiful land, and he was stern but strong, loved by his people and respected by his foes. It must still be so.'
The set of Egfrith's jaw tightens, but she says nothing. Aberthol continues.
'I will tell you what happened to me. With such fine protectors in my home, what have I to fear?'
