First: if no creature page exists, please use Create new creature and fill in all parameters that you know.

If a creature page already exists, please edit the page and fill in any missing information in both the template parameters and the headers.

Second: there are pre-determined lists for both the location and instance parameters that will categorize the creature for you. The lists are found at the bottom of Template:Creature. For more explanation:

The location parameter: this parameter is for Regions. These are the larger areas within a Land that are not listed under the minimap. Ex: Bree-land, Ered Luin, and The Lone-lands are regions within the land of Eriador. The Plateau of Gorgoroth is a region within the land of Mordor. The creatures will be automatically categorised by region, unless the instance parameter is used.
The area parameter: this is usually the area within the region where the creature can be found. This is generally, but not always, the name under the minimap. You can also double check the map by pressing M to make sure what area you are in. This can be specific, if the creature is only found in a specific location such as a public dungeon or point of interest, use that location if there is a matching page. If the mob is only met in a single quest instance, used the full quest name. These mobs will be categorised by Region.
Moria is the one and only exception, and the areas are used for categorisation. The area must match the exact name of the area.
The instance parameter: the instance parameter should only be used when a creature is found within an instance that is accessed by the instance finder (instances, raids, and skirmishes). In this case leave both location and area parameters blank. The mobs will be automatically categories by the instance, not the region.
If the mob or creature is met in several areas, use the one most where most are in the parameter and reference the others in the text under location. If the mob/creature is met in several Regions, add the Region category at the bottom of the page. if exactly same creature met in both a Region and an instance-finder instance, record in the Region, include the instance in the text, and add the instance category at the bottom.
see Category:Creatures by Location and the sub-category for Creatures by instance to explore how they get categorised. The list of locations in the template must be updated for new regions and finder instances.
Note about Tooltip Coords below: Coordinates make no sense for creatures which roam a larger area, but a link to bring up a map is nice, without values though. For creatures roaming landmarks, use 'Tooltip Coords' with correct values for the landmark. For static creatures or those patrolling a very narrow location, use values for the centre point of the creature. For rare creatures, add coordinates for where it is observed, one link per different location.
