Voronwë was a loyal Elf of the High Elves of Gondolin who guided a messenger to the hidden city of Gondolin. He was known for his steadfastness, bravery, and dedication to the service of the Valar Ulmo and the protection of Gondolin. Voronwë was among the Elves chosen by Turgon to sail westward seeking the aid of the Valar. His voyage was shipwrecked on the coasts of the northern highlands, where he discovered the messenger and agreed to guide him back to the hidden city. During the journey, Voronwë navigated the treacherous northern highlands and the mountains ringing the refuge, ensuring the messenger reached Gondolin safely and delivered Ulmo’s warning of the city’s impending doom at the hands of Morgoth.
He remained devoted to Gondolin until its fall, helping the messenger, Idril, and other survivors escape through secret paths. His loyalty and courage preserved the line of Turgon and ensured the continuity of key events in the First Age, including the eventual birth of Eärendil. Voronwë’s role exemplifies the subtle intervention of the Valar in mortal affairs, guiding destiny through chosen individuals. His actions directly influenced the survival of Gondolin’s royal line and helped preserve hope for the Free Peoples during the catastrophic events of the First Age.[1]
