Crafting Quests

Hiya, if the quest names have been changed then they need moving to the correct name (use the move tab at the top of the page). The changes you have been making will just lead to Crafting: Crafting: Quest name in the quest banner once they have been moved. DancesInTrees 06:55, 22 February 2008 (PST)

Fixed. --Ahrien 14:31, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Quest templates

You're right it would make much more sense to include the solo/fellowship etc in the template - but I'm afraid the answer to both questions is I'm a complete template noob :p . Also Eleazaros has been working on an alternative quest banner/tooltip/thing - which reminds me, I need to go & comment on it. DancesInTrees 05:25, 27 February 2008 (PST)

To be honest, I don't know the admins yet, so I jumped with my suggestion the first one to edit my user talk :P --Ahrien 14:31, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
hehe no worries. btw just moving your character page to the 'correct' place. edit: Or not - you already have User:Ahrien/Ahrien DancesInTrees 07:04, 27 February 2008 (PST)

Chat Meeting

Hello Ahrien,
this is a reminder that there is a Chat Meeting scheduled for next Saturday (August 16th) at the usual time. You can find out more in the Contributor's Corner, as well as the Announcement on the Forums. I'm hoping that this time we will see a larger attendance so that we can discuss some of the topics on everyone's mind and work out our plans for MoM. --Fedaykin 17:24, 8 August 2008 (PDT)

Hello Ahrien,

You've done some major posting here so i've upgrade your wiki account to "ninja"

Cleanup Pages

Hiya, Ahrien! In all fairness, it's time to start cleaning up your attempt at quick item pages. Please visit Category:Item Tooltips and start "wikify"ing those pages by using Template Talk:Item Tooltip and ==Quest Reward== section with a line This item is a quest reward for the following quest(s): and the next line *[[Quest:Quest Name|]]. Of course you are not obligated to do this, however I thought it only fair that you help with that project since you started it :) Rogue 21:47, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

TBH, I am more interested in the lore of the quests, and that's where I am putting my focus. I just use the image PH to have some sort of info and to make it easy for someone else to wikify items (don't you agree it's an easy way to contribute? Someone with little experience with wiki only needs to check the image and fill the template). If nobody else does, I will, but not before finishing revising the quests I have (and I have hundreds of them). But lately I have been categorising the PH to have at least some sort of structured info Ahrien 7:29, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
If you don't mind too terribly, if you throw up placeholder images I'll follow through and wikify them to the correct format. I don't have all the information myself so if you just toss the images up I'm great. --Brasky 15:44, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
You're welcome to wikify items. In fact, I thank you for doing it ;) --Ahrien 7:11, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Using the Lootbox template in the Quest Rewards section

Hi, hi. I've seen you're doing lots of quest articles. Got a suggestion regarding that - what would you say to displaying item rewards in a lootbox template - in the appropriate section of the quest template ofc. The way Lootbox looks can be seen on Thrâng#Loot. Cheers, Orions 19:18, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestion. I will look into this, and wikification of items I entered, when I run out of quests to enter. Unfortunately, I have a long list of quests pending. But feel free to give it a try to some quests, like the volume 2 ones I am working on right now. All items have an image that I use as a placeholder till I have the chance to do it properly. Ahrien 7:51, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
I just gave it a try anyway. The {{imageph}} tag does not work properly with your Lootbox template, and for me to use it would require to wikify all rewards instead of just using placeholders. Now, I have had this request recently, but right now I feel my time is better invested in quests than in wikifying rewards. Let me know if you can fix this issue and I will give it another try. Ahrien 7:58, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
I actually meant using wikified items in the quest pages - I understand that at the moment you are adding placeholders. I've wikified several items you put as placeholders, will try to do the same with some quest reward items and put into the quest template. Orions 09:49, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Ok, I did it with Quest:Chapter_2:_Store-houses_of_the_Western_Halls. The only problem is that the 3-item lootbox is a bit wider than the template. That is easy to solve though - changing the table width to 664px helps. I have changed one section to demonstrate - if we change all sections to 664px, ta-daaam, problem solved. The Lootbox template will always have a max of 3 items in one row, so it won't cause any problems with any given number of item rewards. IMO it looks quite good :) --Orions 10:33, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
It looks good to me, but the quest template I am using is not mine, and I don't know what other issues would cause to change the width of the table. Maybe you should talk about this with someone with more knowledge on templates. -- Ahrien 11:08, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
One way to check :) Can think of anything that would break really. The only tricky point is that all the previously done quests would have to be reworked that way. Not a problem though, because if we agree on using Lootbox in the quest template, we will have to edit the quests anyway. Not before wikifying the items though. --Orions 11:53, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
I have done the same with Quest:Pulling Beards, this time with 4 quest reward items. Looks ok. --Orions 13:11, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
I was wondering if the original size was calculated to be able to view the whole page at low screen resolutions like 800x600. I think the template was created by DancesInTrees and there is a talk page about this template. I will copy this discussion there so he can advise us in this matter. -- Ahrien 8:14, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
Hm, another little bug. If the item has "disambigpage = Item:{{PAGENAME}}" in its code, the template messes up. It has to be the proper name of the item, templates don't like {{PAGENAME}}... I have corrected one item of the three and purposefully left the other two alone - just to illustrate an example. --Orions 10:44, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Tooltip Images

Hi, when you upload item tooltip images, if you put [[Category:Item Tooltips]] in the comment it will categorize the image appropriately... otherwise it ends up in the Things to do section for uncategorized images. Same theory for icon images, etc. Cheers! MysterX 08:19, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Ops, didn't know. Will do, thanks. Ahrien 8:20, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Hello, I noticed you were online and I'm experiencing some problems with uploading images. I don't know if you got time, but if you do, could you maybe join the IRC and help me out? Sorry, I hope you don't think this is spam. Ravanel 14:10, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

Quest template and quests

When I view Create new quest the order for each section is -- Infobox quest, Quest chain, Walkthrough and Notes, Reward, and lastly the Quest text -- and when I see the quests you and others are creating it is in a different order from the template. Is there a reason for this? Are you guys purposely moving the sections around every time you make a new quest article or are you copying a boilerplate somewhere I don't know about? This is a bit distracting to me as the quest template is fairly new and the order was fought over specifically. This can be changed in the template / boilerplate but with good reason. The reason it was decided to be the order that it is, is because everyone believed that walkthroughs and rewards were more important information than the actual in-game quest text. People will go for a walkthrough first, that is why they are here searching out quests. Rogue 20:21, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

I don't know about other people, but I did change the order some time ago. The reason was, back then I was not recording any info about quests walkthrough, and since I was updating quests that I did months before, I couldn't remember any specifics on them. So, most walktrough sections were left Pending. In top of that, most quests don't really require a walkthrough, it's not that what needs to be done and where to do it cannot be find in the text section, explaines by the quest givers and other NPCs.
With that in mind, I moved the section to the end of the template. Obviously, I have a copy of the template on my own drive, so it's the one I am using every single time.
I apologize for changing the order. I did not know there was a reason for it, and since I am pretty new to wikies (I contribute a lot, but you will notice I am more like a robot contributor. I always do the same and rarely try or do something new) I didn't know it would have been good etiquette to talk about it with you. -- Ahrien 8:22, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Not a huge deal, I was more curious than anything. I'm not too worried at the moment as it is more important to get the information out there. The Quest text is for exactly what is in the quest log where walkthrough can have as little as a location of an NPC or as much as detailed information on where to find an elusive object or place. These things can be added later by someone who just finished the quest or someone like myself with a higher level character who is bored and may go back and wander around looking for locations. You are right though, some quests like go talk to this person hardly need explanation. Rogue 14:06, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Not sure why that is a template, just as easy to copy / paste that information into quests that have that reward. There's no real easy way of adding that short of editing every quest individually. Rogue 15:47, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

I noticed you've added a bunch of quests listing the area as "The Water-works". FYI The in-game name of this zone is The Waterworks. --Gaerlin 19:00, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I know there may be some inconsistences in some quests, but I always try to use the same name the game shows. In this case, the name in the map is "The Water-works", so when using the Tooltip Coords template I use this name. Sometimes I realize later that the in-game name for the area is different than the map's one. and in this case I usually go with the "radar" name. Thanks for the tip, though. --Ahrien 7:31, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
Well the important thing is that we all agree on a single name for any given reference, otherwise we'll end up with broken links. --Gaerlin 12:49, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Toolip Coords

Seriously?? You have the correct file names and size requirement for all the maps??? And the coord information for max and min x and y???? Did you post it on the Tooltip Coord talk page??? Rogue 21:29, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

for tidying up and adding to the quests I put up. They look a lot better now. Ispbard 20:33, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Creature Info

Under the location section should always be region, such as Bree-land, Forochel, Evendim etc. Unless it is found in an instance, in which case you can put the instance name there. If the category does not show Region creatures or Instance mobs that means that place has not been added to the template yet. I have been adding as I see them. Never put a link in the location section. That link should be placed under the location section below the template. Also, never add a category link at the top of the page for creature location, etc. That's done automatically through the template. Rogue 16:16, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Creature image category

I don't think it's necessary to separate the categories too much when it comes to images. That's the back drop where people aren't looking too close to find stuff. We might, but not generally. Leave as is unless you can give me a good reason. Rogue 16:49, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

Truth is, I thought this separation would be helpful mainly for NPCs. Some time ago, I was trying to outfit a character to resemble the Rangers of Esteldín, and I couldn't find an exhaustive collection of Ranger Images. With this in mind, and thinking that other people might have the same interest, I thought that separating the images for gender and race could be helpful for someone. It's not like it is a lot of work.
But then I realized that the same could be done with creatures. After all, we have some clear categories, by genus and by type. I don't know why would someone want to check all goblin images, but I don't think anyone would want to check ALL creature images anyway.
Summarizing, I don't have a real good reason for separating creature images, but since we DO store them, I cannot thing a reason not to. After all, having some categories would be better than having a single category with hundreds of images like we do have now Ahrien 13:31, 21 January 2010 (UTC)
I'm just a noob, so sorry if I say something stupid. But wouldn't those new NPC categories mean that, when uploading the image of a random NPC who happens to be a ranger, you have to put him in the ranger category rather than in the NPC Images category? In that case you have to check what categories exist every time you upload a NPC image and that would make it more complicated for me to do. --Ravanel 14:04, 21 January 2010 (UTC)
In effect yes, that's what you would have to do Ravanel. But if you don't put anything for a category it put the uploaded image into a category called Uncategorized images. We admins generally check this from time to time and categorize those images. After a while you will become familiar with how we do categorize and it'll be less of a big deal. But good point.
You can put any article, or Image, under more than one category. I think its mandatory to have at least one category, and that would be the Category:NPC Images. If you feel like it, I thought I could separate NPCs by race (Race of Man, Elf, Dwarf, Hobbit) and then by gender (Man, Woman, Male Elf, Female Elf, Dwarf, Male Hoobit, Female Hobbit). Any further categorization could be done by you, me or by someone else. This is a wiki, and what we do here is not supposed to be ever final. I do something, you improve it, someone else improves it over yours, etc... I am not asking for you, or anyone else for the matter, to know all categories in the wiki. I only know a few of them! -- Ahrien 20:50, January 21st 2010 (UTC)

As for you Ahrien, I can see your point. How about a compromise. I say we categorize the images in their genus. It's not species, but it's better than 1 big one. That way if you want to see all the Beasts, The Dead, or Ancient Evil creatures they'd be separated that way. What do you think? Rogue 16:11, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Yes, we could do this. As I said, I had no real reason for creatures, other than since its the same work to file an image under any category, I thought that the most categorization, the better. By genus would be fine, too. Maybe I am oldschool, or maybe is because I work with relational databases, but things usually work better under some form of categorization and structuration. -- Ahrien 20:50, January 21st 2010 (UTC)
So, we are finally going for the original structure instead of the one you suggested? What made you change your mind? Just wondering. -- Ahrien 09:02, January 25th 2010 (UTC)
Yah, I decided that you were probably right on that one. Giving it though usually lets me see the light. Rogue 16:36, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

Well guys, I am stepping down from wikifying.
There has been some changes in my life that will left me very little time for this kind of things.
