Project Plan

Name: Removal of small-tags

Workspace: (none)

Members: Stargazer

Summary/Description

A lot of <small>...</small> tags have been inserted in many places all over the wiki, making the text contained within very hard to read – especially for people that may have (visual) disabilities and the like – and/or causing other negative effects on user experience; such as e.g. unnecessary strain on the eyes of the reader. As a wiki we should be as inclusive as possible to everyone, and not needlessly impose negative effects upon users without very good reason for doing so. Therefore, the use of these small-tags represents an issue that should be corrected; wherever possible they should be removed – unless in rare exceptions where there may be very good reason for keeping them, that would warrant their use – and in some cases perhaps replaced by other forms of text formatting that can accomplish a similar goal as originally intended yet do not carry adverse effects to readability in the process.

Purpose & Goal

Purpose:

Improving readability and further inclusiveness for all users of the wiki, by correcting issues caused from the use of small-tags in many places all over the wiki, such that the same end result can be accomplished without the adverse effects that comes with the use of small-tags.

Goal:

Removing most (if not all) occurrences of small-tags – excluding uses on e.g. User and/or Talk pages – possibly replacing them with other forms of text formatting that do not negatively impact readability for viewers, as and where needed.

Project Scope

Target

The whole wiki except for:

  • User and/or Talk pages
  • Social pages
  • Gadgets & Modules
  • MediaWiki & Portal
  • Official statements by Turbine/SSG (such as e.g. Release Notes etc.) and similar quotes/reproductions.

Work Breakdown Structure:

  1. Investigate (and inventory) the various usages of <small>...</small> tags throughout the wiki.
  2. Identify different cases/patterns of usage.
  3. Divide these into groups of sub-cases.
  4. Determine a proposed solution for correction of each sub-case individually, along with handling of possible exceptions to this.
  5. Come up with a way/method to implement the correction(s), in each sub-case.
  6. Carry out the corrections in stages, one sub-case at a time.
  7. Review outcome
  8. Analyse any problems, side-effects, or other unintended results caused, that may need further handling.

Activity Plan & Progress

☑ Change <small>''or''</small> and <small>or</small> to plain or — mainly in Quest Infoboxes
  • In instances where (italic) "or" is not separating text that is linkified/emphasised on both sides, then keep it italic to distinguish the surrounding text.
  • Also when (italic) "or" is located in the middle of one enclosing link, keep it italic as well
☐ Change <small>''and''</small> as well as <small>and</small> to plain and — mainly in Quest Infoboxes
  • In instances where (italic) "and" is not separating text that is linkified/emphasised on both sides, then keep it italic to distinguish the surrounding text.
  • Also when (italic) "and" is located in the middle of one enclosing link, keep it italic as well
☑ Change <small>''at''</small> to plain at
☑ Change <small>''in''</small> and <small>in</small> to plain in
  • Possible cases where "in" is located in the middle of one enclosing link may need to be handled differently. Rewrite link? Might be case-dependent.
  • Currently remaining exceptions: Help:Contents, a couple of Article Creation tools, and racial origins. — TBD
☑ Change <small>''with''</small> to plain with
☑ Change <small>&</small> to plain &
☑ Rewrite or possibly replace double small tags (i.e. <small><small>...</small></small>)
  • Perhaps surround with parentheses instead? Something else? Might be case-dependent.
☐ TBD
