Gerontius Took, commonly known as the Old Took, was the twenty-sixth Thain of the Shire and the head of the Took family during the late Third Age. Renowned for his longevity and influence, he lived to the remarkable age of 130 years and became one of the most prominent Hobbits in the history of the Shire. He was the father and ancestor of many notable Hobbits. His long life, large family, and close friendship with the wizard Gandalf ensured that his name remained well remembered among the Hobbits.

Gerontius Took was born in T.A. 2790 (S.R. 1190). As a member of the Took clan, he was descended from a long line of Shire leaders, including the famous Bandobras Took, hero of the Battle of Greenfields. Upon the death of his father, Gerontius succeeded to the office of Thain of the Shire. He served as Thain for seventy-two years, presiding over the Took family from the Great Smials in Tuckborough. His tenure occurred during a relatively peaceful period in the Shire, though memories of earlier threats from goblins and other dangers still lingered in Hobbit traditions.

Gerontius became known for his remarkable longevity. Living to the age of 130, he was one of the oldest Hobbits recorded in Shire history. Only individual hobbits whose lives were extended by the power of the One Ring, such as Bilbo Baggins and Sméagol, were known to surpass his age. Gerontius married Adamanta Chubb, and together they had twelve children. Through them he became the forebear of many prominent Hobbit families, including the Tooks, Bagginses, Brandybucks, and Bolgers. Among his children were Belladonna Took, later the mother of Bilbo Baggins, and Mirabella Took, whose daughter Primula Brandybuck was the mother of Frodo Baggins.

Gerontius died in T.A. 2920 (S.R. 1320). Upon his death, the office of Thain passed to his son Isengrim Took III. Among the Hobbits, Gerontius was remembered as a lively and sociable figure. He was said to have enjoyed fine food and grand celebrations, particularly the lavish Midsummer festivities hosted at the Great Smials. Stories also recall that he had a fondness for spiced boar ribs and other hearty fare. Gerontius was known to be a friend of Gandalf the Grey. According to Hobbit tales, Gandalf once gave him a pair of magical diamond studs that fastened themselves and would not come undone until commanded. Within Hobbit culture, Gerontius came to symbolize the prosperity and large families associated with the Took clan. His longevity and many descendants earned him a lasting place in Shire lore, where he was fondly remembered simply as "the Old Took."
