Rations & Horn

I realize that this article on LoTRO travel is intended more as an overview than as a source of detailed information (which can be gained from the articles linked within). Still, I think there are a couple other details appropriate for inclusion.

One is the Mustering Horn, which can summon & transport one's fellowship to the location of the one using it.

The other is Travel Rations. Unlike Milestone skills (which have a cool-down "cost") or renting Stable Horses (which cost gold), some forms of swift travel (Return-to traits, Return-to-Housing skills, and the aforementioned summoning action of a Mustering Horn) are paid for with Travel Rations. They are mentioned in relation to the Hunter wayfaring skills, but not to the others,

Less important, but possibly also worth mentioning, is the way to toggle between running and walking (both foot and mounted) via the INSERT key (and perhaps what the walking speed is relative to running). Perhaps swimming, too (and its relative speed).

Also, I have not found any definitive discussion of which (whether?) the various movement skills/buffs enhance both foot and mounted travel. I'm thinking in particular of the Hunter "Find the Path" skill here, for which I find conflicting answers on the Web. Not sure if this would really be the article to cover that, though.

Additionally, I believe the 1-day effect limit on the wrapped horse whistle from the gift box is 24 hours of playing time and not, as described in the article, a day of real time (nor, of course, a Middle Earth day or 24 hours of mounted time). That is, the expiration clock pauses while you are logged out (or, at least, it seemed that way for for me, but then, maybe I misread my clock). For a long time, I was afraid to unwrap it, in fear that it would be mostly wasted unless I was prepared to fill an entire day with LoTRO play, rather than just a couple hours each evening. (I eventually used the whistle anyway--just to free up the slot in my inventory bags.) Halgoreth (talk) 19:57, 23 August 2012 (EDT)

These are all great ideas, and I think this article would definitely be the place to address them on at least an introductory level. If you'd like to go ahead and work some of that in, definitely feel free. (I know making your first edit, especially when you have a lot to say, can be intimidating, so here's your little "go for it!" nudge from me.) If any more encouragement were needed, I can tell from the header format on this article that it was originally written a long time ago, so even if it's been touched up in some places, that means there's probably a lot that has been added to the game or updated that isn't necessarily documented. Thanks for the feedback and welcome aboard. :) Sethladan 20:50, 23 August 2012 (EDT)
Another "go for it". Just remember that "summarizing articles" like this one is just that, summarizing. The fine print and explicit details are better kept at the original pages, certainly details that are useful but only once in a blue moon. That said, thanks for your suggestions and keep them coming :)

Really fast champions

Thanks to Magill for putting the article in a more logical arrangement.

I have a question about the following line:

"Champions get a 125% speed buff for 15 seconds on a 5 minute cooldown at level 28. "

Really?! Champions can move over twice as fast as regular running? (Never run one, so I can't say.)

Should not that be a "25% buff"?

Halgoreth (talk) 00:18, 2 November 2013 (EDT)

I didn't create the original line and don't play a champion; however, I would tend to agree with you -- Champions and Wardens probably get the same buff. +25%.
Although, +25% and 125% are actually the same thing in "Turbine Speak." As I'm writing this, I recall that at one time Turbine listed things like "Mount Speed" as 168% instead of 68%, It's one of those "point of view" numbers -- 168% above zero or 68% faster than walking. Needless to say "everybody" was confused.

Oh, I totally realize that you were mostly just reformatting someone else's text. I also realize that, when Turbine refers to a 68% speed mount, they mean one that is 68% faster than regular running (or rather, 1.68 times running speed). I generally describe such a stat as 168%, so the Champions' "125%" made sense, but only if it referred to a 25% buff over normal. (Again, I'm not absolutely certain. . .having never run a Champ myself.)

Frequent-Flyer Stable Discounts

"Travel to Kinship[/Personal] House" is listed as Special under "Purchase Travel skills from LOTRO Store". I kinda doubt that you can buy those. Maybe they should been listed, instead, in the preceding " 'Return To' Traits and Skills" section.

Again, I gotta say that this article is so much more accurate, better organized, and useful than it was a year ago. Good work, all!

Additionally, mentioning the Hunter taxi service is certainly apropos because the Free inhabitants of Erda á la Turbine rely on it so much. However, if we also mention the Wardens' mustering skill, should we not also include the acorns of the Guardians? (Or any other class-specific movement-related skill. I'm mostly only familiar with the capabilities of a Guard.)

Sorry to add to this discussion twice in as many days, but I'm on a roll. (And have been consuming much mead.)

No problem with the comments, keep them coming.
  • Feel free to write up the "Acorn." I know that it exists, but have never played a Guardian, so I have no experience using it.
  • It should probably be combined with the Captain's Summoning ability. -- "Summoning Horns" are also missing. (Their mechanic is close to the Captain's summoning skill.) I've been summoned, but never used either myself directly. (Don't play a Captain either.)
  • Just looking at that section "Special" ... it's a Transclusion of the Category: Travel Skills -- where it makes no sense there either. I suspect I had begun to "sort-out" that category and never finished. It contains a single milestone bind to Kings Crossing... weird.
Note: "MAPS" may becoming available from Trainers with the HD update, as Trainers no longer will have any function outside of the Introduction. Unclear at the moment.
  • Ok, I've fixed that one section, did some more re-arranging, and added the headers for Mustering Horn, Guardian and Captain along with my limited knowledge of the three.
Please feel free to add/correct what's there.
