Rocs (Anzûri in Shagâni) are enormous predatory birds of Haradwaith, renowned for their intelligence, strength, and formidable presence. Towering over other creatures of the land, these birds are capable of complex thought, problem-solving, and even speech, marking them as among the most sapient of Middle-earth's avian species, in line with the Great Eagles of the North. Their massive wings allow them to soar for hours, scouting and hunting across the southern plains and mountains with unmatched grace.

While many rocs are highly aggressive and territorial, some exhibit surprising gentleness. Accounts tell of individuals aiding lost or injured animals, such as a roc that carefully sheltered a stranded duckling until it could return to water. Nevertheless, their size, sharp talons, and powerful beaks make even a single roc a deadly threat to livestock, hunters, or unwary travelers. They are cautious and cunning hunters, capable of striking from great heights with precision and intelligence.

Rocs are usually found near high cliffs, open savannahs, or river valleys, where they can maintain both their nests and hunting grounds. Observers note that they are social to varying degrees, sometimes hunting alone, other times gathering in pairs or small flocks. Their extraordinary intelligence and adaptability make them one of the most remarkable predators in Haradwaith, feared, respected, and occasionally revered by those who dwell within their range.
