Ring of Fire and Frost

Saurman's Library houses the Ring of Fire and Frost is part of the Tower of Orthanc raid. In this instance, the Saruman's Fire ring and Frost ring have been given to a pair of Dunlendings.

  • Tier 1 can be done Solo by level 115
  • Tier 2 must be done with help at level 115

Location

This 12-man raid instance is accessed by entering "Isengard: The Tower of Orthanc" from Instance Join. You must have traveled to the Ox-Clan Camp in Isengard prior to entering the raid. As you enter the raid from Instance Join, turn around and proceed straight back to enter this wing.

Boss Fight

The boss of this instance consists of 2 Falcon-clan Dunlendings that have been...enlarged. Each wears a ring: One for fire, one for frost. By attacking a boss, the player will receive a debuff indicating which "flavor" he/she has acquired. Having the Fire debuff will mean that the player is susceptible to Frost damage, and vice versa.

One way to complete this instance is to divide the raid into 2 fellowships. 2 Tanks will tank each boss in the rear corners of the room. The bosses periodically knockback a player, and the tank doesn't want to be knocked out of the corner (although the other players can be kicked around with no problem). The reason that the tank shouldn't be knocked around is that once kicked, the boss will then run towards where the tank was kicked... which is usually not a good place. The rest of each fellowship will follow their respective tanks, and try to stay directly behind each boss. If they stand too far away, the boss will do a ranged attack; standing directly behind the boss avoids this.

Periodically, each boss will spawn small Grims. The Grims need to be taken out ASAP because they buff the bosses. The Grims have to be killed in 3 stages. After 1/3 of their morale is depleted, they will begin absorbing damage until a Crowd-Control skill is used. They will then take damage until they reach 2/3 health, when they will need another CC skill. After this, the Grims can be killed normally. The only real danger in this fight is keeping these Grims on their respective side. Since everyone will have a debuff associated with the boss they are attacking, a stray Grim can quickly wipe the group with the opposite debuff if it is allowed to roam free.

As an example, let's say that we have 2 groups, each fighting a boss. The left side will have the Fire debuff (from striking the Frost boss), while the right side will have the Frost debuff (from striking the Fire boss). If a Fire Grim spawns on the right side and begins attacking the group on the left side (with the Fire debuff), the Grim will quickly kill the group because of the group debuff. As such, it is EXTREMELY important to keep the Grims on the side where they spawn.

Another strategy is to kite the grims that spawn, taking them out afterward (or resetting the fight to eliminate them). A captain or another off tank takes the DPS target giant, with all the DPS hitting that one, then moving over to the other when the first is down. If the group doesn't that many tanks, one can kite the grims and a giant, but might result in more grims as the number spawned is equal to how many players are in front of the giant when he claps.

Challenge

In order to complete the Challenge quest, both giants must be defeated when they have zero "Gathered Rage". They will gain 1 rage every 30 seconds starting as soon as the fight starts. Killing the grims by their respective boss will lower rage (only if killed after 30 seconds).
