Bestowal Dialogue

Gondor and Umbar

"I was told my life would be forfeit should I return here... but I feel this is something I must do."

Background

Belondor has suggested that Sirgon meet with him at the Hungry Deep Tavern, but it will be best if you and your crew attend the meeting as well... for the safety of all involved.

Objective 1

  • Talk to Sirgon below the Hungry Deep Tavern

Sirgon waits below the stairs that climb to the Hungry Deep Tavern.

Sirgon: 'I appreciate you and the crew of the Wave-hunter agreeing to accompany me to this meeting with Belondor, <name>.
'The Hungry Deep, and my fate, awaits me atop these steps.'

Objective 2

You have agreed to stand by Sirgon with much of your crew while he meets with Belondor.

  • Climb up to the Hungry Deep Tavern with Sirgon

Objective 3

  • Stand by Sirgon while he meets with Belondor

You have agreed to stand by Sirgon with much of your crew while he meets with Belondor.

Belondor says, "So it is true. You really have come to Umbar."
Belondor says, "I did not think it could be so."
Belondor says, "And yet I see many strange patrons here at the Hungry Deep."
Belondor says, "They must be friends of yours, if friendship with Sirgon can yet exist."
Sirgon says, "They are the crew of the Wave-hunter, captained by <name>."
Sirgon says, "I value their friendship most highly, and yet..."
Sirgon says, "What use is my friendship, when those I hold most dear come to the greatest harm?"
Belondor says, "You would die for them, and they for you?"
Sirgon says, "Aye."
Belondor says, "My own crew was the same."
Belondor says, "Though all the forces of Gondor be arrayed against us, they would stand with me against them."
Belondor says, "But Azagath spent their lives with nary a thought."

Objective 4

  • Talk to Belondor at the Hungry Deep Tavern

Belondor wants to speak with you about the events that transpired beneath the Mâkhda Khorbo.

Belondor: 'Beneath the Mâkhda Khorbo he worked cruel magic, tearing the life from dear members of my crew, friends I have known for years. They died trusting me, Sirgon. They trusted I would bring them to safety, and trusted that their families would know they did not die for nothing.
'But Azagath spent their lives for no purpose! Their deaths were needless, and provided only the smallest of delays so the Sea-shadow could make his escape! He did not know those men, and he discarded them without thought... only I am left to suffer the grief of their loss.'

Objective 5

  • Stand by Sirgon while he meets with Belondor

You have agreed to stand by Sirgon with much of your crew while he meets with Belondor.

Belondor says, "I am just so tired, Sirgon."
Belondor says, "For so long my hatred consumed me."
Belondor says, "Hatred of you, hatred of Denethor your master, hatred of Gondor."
Belondor says, "It wears out a man, such hatred as that."
Mêshka says, "So! You have come back!"

Objective 6

  • Talk to Mêshka at the Hungry Deep Tavern

Belondor's wife Mêshka has arrived at the Hungry Deep Tavern, and she is not pleased to see that Sirgon has violated her ban upon returning to the Upper Ward.

Mêshka: 'I warned your friend Sirgon not to return to the Upper Ward! Does he think he remains out of reach and free from justice?
'Rothog has slain many such men who believed themselves to be untouchable, and for less reason that this. Belondor has not forgotten how easily Sirgon cast aside his long friendship and was rewarded for it! He followed the Steward Denethor's commands, and questioned them not!'

Objective 7

  • Stand by Sirgon while he meets with Belondor

You have agreed to stand by Sirgon with much of your crew while he meets with Belondor.

Belondor says, "The Steward Denethor is dead, Mêshka."
Belondor says, "Sirgon came here to speak honest words with me."
Mêshka says, "I have heard his honest words."
Mêshka says, "They do not excuse the hurts he and his master inflicted upon us."
Belondor says, "No."
Belondor says, "But I have come to understand the snare in which he was caught."
Belondor says, "The Kindred of the Coins was supposed to be different!"
Belondor says, "We were trying to bring peace and prosperity to Umbar."
Belondor says, "Nakási lost sight of that when she abducted the child Thorongil."
Nauriel says, "She will still pay for that crime. I have not forgotten."
Belondor says, "And Azagath!"
Belondor says, "The man I knew would not have slain the child, not for any reason."
Belondor says, "What changed in him to consider such reckless slaughter?"
Sirgon says, "So it was with the Steward Denethor."
Sirgon says, "He changed. I know not the cause, but his mind became clouded and his heart was hardened."
Belondor says, "I served Umbar, and you Gondor."
Belondor says, "When did each of them cease serving us?"

Objective 8

  • Talk to Sirgon at the Hungry Deep Tavern

Sirgon is compelled to speak on behalf of King Elessar.

Sirgon: 'I know my words are just words, Belondor, and I have given you little reason to believe them. But I speak this from my heart: King Elessar is a good man, and he desires only what is best for his people and for yours. He wants peace between Gondor and Umbar, and prosperity for both.
'I know this is so. He is not the same as the Steward Denethor. Can the Kindred of the Coins come to see this, if Azagath no longer controls them? Can you, and they, work alongside the kingdom of Gondor, and not against it? Can you join hands with King Elessar, if it means setting aside war and conflict?'

Objective 9

  • Remain alert to see what Rothog will do

Rothog the Storm has questions for Belondor.

Rothog the Storm says, "What am I hearing, Belondor?"
Rothog the Storm says, "Does this man turn you against the Kindred?"
With an angry chirp, Gwallang flies down and settles onto Rothog's curved blade
Sirgon says, "Gwallang!"
Rothog the Storm says, "Bird?"
Sirgon says, "Gwallang, it is all right."
Sirgon says, "We are not in danger."
With one last aggressive trill, Gwallang flies back to a safer perch
Rothog the Storm says, "I like that bird. He is afraid of nothing!"

Objective 10

  • Talk to Belondor at the Hungry Deep Tavern

Belondor wishes to speak with you at the Hungry Deep Tavern.

Belondor: 'I hope we have repaired something of the friendship we once possessed, Sirgon, but I am not ready to say the same of that between Gondor and Umbar. Your King has much to prove to us, for we have heard sweet words before, and were deceived. It will not happen again.
'The Kindred of the Coins will survive without Azagath and Nakási. It was larger than both of them. It is larger than all of us, for it is Umbar. Your King will need to realize that if he believes there can be peace between our lands.'

Objective 11

  • Talk to Rothog at the Hungry Deep Tavern

Rothog the Storm has something to say to you.

Rothog: 'What kind of bird was that?'
You tell Rothog that the bird's name is Gwallang, and he is a Limlinn from across the Bay of Belfalas.
'Gwallang. Limlinn. I have not heard these names before. He is brave for one so small.
'But I came here for two purposes: to fight, and to fetch. I am disappointed there was no fight, but now you will come with me.
'Hármelak wants to see you again.'
