Dahâl Huliz, The Arena

"The gladiator pits of Umbar Baharbêl are an instrumental aspect of the Umbaran culture. The battles in the arena of Umbar serve many purposes to the city. Foremost, the arena battles entertain the masses. Second, the arena battles serve to mete out justice against the city's greatest offenders. Since taking control of Umbar, the Kindred of the Coins altered the arena's rules. Capital punishment and wanton death are a thing of the cruel past. Combat is now a sport for the masses to engage with and enjoy. Anyone can enter the pit to enhance their glory. The gladiators bound to the arena serve their sentences by entering battle and fighting to the end...."

Background

The gladiatorial pits of Umbar Baharbêl serve several important purposes: entertaining the masses, keeping their attention focused, and meting justice upon those who break the laws of the city.

Upon taking control of Umbar, the Kindred of the Coins altered the traditional rules of the arena. Most battles are no longer to the death, and the memory of such capital punishment has remained in the cruel past. Combat has become a sport for the masses, and any who dare can enter the fighting pits and attempt to enhance their glory. Gladiators bound to the arena serve their sentences by entering battle and fighting to the end.

Objective 1

  • Talk to Rothog the Storm in the Arena

Rothog awaits you in the Arena.

Rothog the Storm: 'I welcome you to my domain: Dahâl Huliz, the grand arena of Umbar Baharbêl! I consider these sands to be sacred ground; you should do the same. In this place, those who are accused fight for their freedom, and those who are not fight for greater glory.
'On this day we fight not to the death, for those who perish would be unable to entertain the crowds on the morrow. Instead we fight until a combatant's first submission. In that way those who lose can be spared, that they may gain in strength, and fight again on a future day.
'Be warned, for the Arena plays host to many surprises. May you fight well! Give all those who attend a magnificent show and you will have their approval, as I do!'
Rothog the Storm says, "I am Rothog, hunter of the Heirs, commander of the Gharáb-ikir, Captain of the Hêlsi, keeper of the Tor-gardens, and loyal servant to the people of Umbar!"
Rothog the Storm says, " On this auspicious occasion, you have the honour to test your strength, mete justice upon the condemned, and earn the adulation of our people!"

Objective 2

  • Talk to Ezaphir and defeat the first challenge

Ezaphir will issue your first challenge when you are ready to compete.

Ezaphir: 'We are honoured by your presence here today! I shall call forth the first set of the Khâbraghai, the blade-fodder, so you may warm up your muscles and get your blood flowing!
'The crowd wants to cheer for you, but on some days they can be fickle-minded. They want to see a good show. See that they do.'
Ezaphir calls for the first challenge!
Defeated the First Challenge!

Objective 3

  • Talk to Ezaphir and defeat the second challenge

Ezaphir congratulates you on your success, but he warns you the following challenges may not be so easy.

Ezaphir: 'Any who have sat in the stands of Dahâl Huliz know the names of the favoured champions who do battle on the fighting sands. You will face one of these now! Use your wit, guile, and strength to survive, and perhaps your own name will be raised as high!
'Now will I call them forth!'
Ezaphir calls forth the second challenge!
Akhmâr Redstorm says, "I speak to all in attendance! It is I, Akhmâr Redstorm! These paltry challengers will be no match for me!"

or

Horthion says, "Behold! It is Horthion who stands before you. Know that I will lay you low!"

or

Ulanor says, "Oh, I will get my revenge on all of you! You will now pay!"
Defeated the Second Challenge!

Objective 4

  • Talk to Ezaphir and defeat the third challenge

Ezaphir congratulates you on your victory, but there are more difficult challenges to come.

Ezaphir: 'Well-struck, and well done. Every victory adds to the story of your name.
'But do not rest yet, for now I call forth the next round of Khâbraghai. Will you best these as you did the others? Do not let down your guard! The crowd will prepare themselves for the more challenging contest to come, but you must focus upon each battle as it is joined, and not look past them to the next!'
Ezaphir calls forth the third challenge!
Defeated the Third Challenge!

Objective 5

  • Talk to Ezaphir and defeat the fourth challenge

Ezaphir will call forth one of the more stalwart gladiators to test your mettle in glorious combat.

Ezaphir: 'You must forget those you have fought before. Your next foes will be far more dangerous, and if you cannot best them the story of your name will end here!
'But perhaps it is not to be so? Can it be we will see your true mettle here instead? I call forth your next challenge, and may you prove its equal!'
Ezaphir calls forth the fourth challenge!
Bhastah says, "Together our abilities can fell any foe in this arena! Shakfut, you know what to do."

or

Nakrov the Scarred says, "I am held here by filth such as you? No more! Your bodies will litter these sands!""

or

Shaidal says, Does this not entertain you? Unjustly I am held here to fight for your amusement! I spit on the ground.'
You are victorious, and Ezaphir returns to the fighting sands

Objective 6

  • Talk to Ezaphir and defeat Rothog the Storm

Ezaphir informs you that you are about to face your greatest challenge in the arena: Rothog the Storm himself.

Ezaphir: 'Your greatest challenge has arrived, my impressive friend. Will you face it with courage and with strength, or will its arrival send you screaming from these sands in fear?
'I believe in you, though all the crowd cheers for your opponent. They do not think you have what it will take to best this final opponent, and why should they? You must win them over. You must attain their belief with a great display of your prowess and your fighting skill!
'Your final challenge is this: you must defeat he who calls this place home. Rothog the Storm is your final opponent, my friend, and he is a mighty foe indeed. Can you take this crown from him? Can you defeat the Arena's favourite son and champion? We will see, friend. Show us now, and win glory for your name!
'Fight now! Dahâl Huliz will ring with the sound of battle, and let the cheering of the crowd ascend even to the stars above!'
Ezaphir calls forth your final challenge: Rothog the Storm!
You have defeated Rothog the Storm, and the spoils of victory are yours!
