The First Age witnessed the arrival of Men in the Broad Marsh. These people, called the Nartáni, were preceded by Elvish groups identifying themselves as Tárthai, as well as dwarves of the Temámir clan. The Nartáni are said to have lived peacefully in the valley, often in darkness. The Tárthai instructed them in agriculture, and the Nartáni venerated a nature-spirit known as Írmu Who Weeps, whom the Elves also revered under another name.

The first kingdom in the Broad Marsh was Aburûn. Its rulers adopted the title Shâr, in imitation of Hamât, a wealthier neighboring realm. Aburûn maintained a friendly alliance with the seafaring kingdom of Umbru-mâra, to whom they were related.

Eventually, Khandari raiders arrived from the north and east, bearing bronze weapons. Unprepared for warfare, the Nartáni were easily defeated. Warlords seized food, captives, and hewed the forests to drive out the Elves. Subsequently, Umbru-mâra claimed the wetlands south of the Ikorbân, and Aburûn ceased to exist.
