Advancement within the Lotro-wiki community is based on a consensus of current leadership. Promotion is earned through consistent, quality contributions, a helpful attitude toward other editors, and a demonstrated understanding of the wiki’s standards and style.

While there are many ways to approach a single task, we ask that users respect the established workflows and "know-how" of higher-ranking members. Major stylistic or code-related changes should be discussed either on specific talk pages or on Discord before implementation.

Ranking System

Lotro-wiki uses a unique ranking system that distributes mediawiki permissions, community involvement, and structural management of the wiki. The following is a brief overview of our community tiers. For a full technical breakdown of specific permissions, please see Special:ListGroupRights.

User

The User rank is the entry level for all newly registered accounts. This is the starting point for contributors to begin building upon the wiki’s established framework. To protect the site’s integrity against automated spam, the following security measures are currently in place for this rank:

  • Email Confirmation: A confirmed email address is required to create an account.
  • CAPTCHA: Automated security checks are enabled for certain actions (such as creating new pages).
  • Link Restrictions: To prevent spam, new accounts are prohibited from posting external URLs. Attempting to do so may result in an automated ban.
To view the full rights and privileges list see Users.

Ninja

The Ninja rank is assigned to contributors who have been verified as humans. This rank is the first step in moving beyond the automated security restrictions of a new account. It signifies that the user has begun making legitimate contributions and has established a presence within the community.

  • Bypasses CAPTCHA: Ninjas no longer have to complete automated security checks when creating pages or adding content.
  • Patrol System: Edits made by Ninjas are flagged in the "Recent Changes" feed for review by higher-ranking editors. This allows the community to provide feedback, ensuring the user's work aligns with the wiki's formatting and style guidelines.

Editor

The Editor rank is awarded to contributors who have demonstrated a deep understanding of the wiki’s standards and a commitment to maintaining accurate, high-quality content. Editors are trusted with advanced tools to help organize and refine the site’s information.

Role Expectations:

  • Maintenance & Improvement: Proactively update and improve content as you encounter it, ensuring edits remain clean and aligned with the wiki's style.
  • Specialization & Project Collaboration: Editors with specialized knowledge are encouraged to lead specific sections or projects. Collaborating with others via Discord or Talk pages ensures continuity and allows the team to "divide and conquer" complex tasks.
  • Community Engagement: Communication and collaboration with fellow editors is essential. Editors are expected to be helpful and gracious, following the Code of Conduct to ensure the wiki remains a productive environment for all contributors and a reliable resource for readers.

Administrator

Administrators are members of the leadership team responsible for site maintenance, conflict resolution, and community guidance. This role requires a high level of trust, as it involves managing sensitive site permissions and moderation tools.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Active Communication: Serving as a point of contact on Talk pages and Discord to answer questions, address concerns, and guide contributors.
  • Collaboration & Solidarity: Working in a unified front with other leadership ranks to ensure consistency in wiki formatting and community morale. Administrators act as the standard for the community, providing a stable and reliable presence.
  • Community Standards: Ensuring the wiki remains a productive and high-quality environment by upholding the site's guidelines and supporting the collective efforts of all editors.

Bureaucrat

Bureaucrats are administrators entrusted with the management of user ranks and the preservation of the wiki’s core philosophy.

  • Promotion Management: Identifying contributors ready for advancement and initiating the vote process by providing the proposed rank and the user’s contribution history.
  • Culture Stewardship: Serving as a primary keeper of the wiki’s values, ensuring the community’s growth aligns with the established philosophy.

Director

Directors are the stewards and architects of Lotro-wiki. This role is responsible for the long-term vision and high-level management of the community.

  • Structural Design: Responsible for making major architectural changes and maintaining site-wide standards.
  • Consensus & Resolution: Acting as the final vote in community deadlocks and addressing sensitive member or policy issues.

Promotions

Promotions from User to Editor are based on the consistency of beneficial edits and good communication with the other wiki editors.

The process for Administrative roles is different. Leadership monitors active Editors to determine who would be a strong addition to the Administration team. We look for individuals who:

  • Communicate effectively with the community.
  • Can both correct and instruct new users on our standards and guidelines.
  • Take on larger projects and demonstrate proficiency with advanced tools like templates and boilerplates.
  • Proactively problem-solve and collaborate with other editors to resolve issues as they arise.
