Future Instance, Raid, Instance Boss, Raid Boss Articles
I have an idea concerning the creation of future instance, raid and respective boss articles. This would also affect current boss articles. I'll certainly need approval from the community for this one, so please post some feedback about whether you like the idea or not, and if anything should be changed. The plan is as follows:
- I'll create a few articles, which will be [[Instance guide]], [[Raid guide]], [[Instance Boss guide]] and [[Raid Boss guide]] (could be named differently if necessary). These pages will contain guides on how to go about creating new articles of that type, including some of the information I've gathered so far under User:Fedaykinx/Editing, some of which is a result of this discussion. These pages can include (at least):
- A little information on adding a new instance/raid to the Category:Instances or Category:Raids page.
- Guide on how to set up the new instance/raid/boss page, including headline details and the "Template" page that needs to be filled out by the contributor.
- Instance, Boss & Loot guides, detailing how to take nice screenshots and/or make quality cutouts that won't have to be replaced.
- Guide to properly exploring the instance/raid and creating a map with boss locations etc.that won't have to be replaced.
- Setting up and maintaining an Instance/Raid Article Completion Checklist (further discussion on usage required first).
- Any additional information that might be needed.
The purpose of these pages would be to establish a guideline/standard with which all future Instance/Raid/Boss articles should comply, thereby ensuring that the articles are always easy to read, navigate and understand for the average LOTRO player.
I'm not sure whether the pages should be a standard which all such articles must meet, or just a guide to loosely follow. --Fedaykin 21:41, 4 November 2007 (PST)
- This sounds like a very good idea. Whether it is a standard which all such articles must meet or just a guide to loosely follow. I would do both, allow everyone to loosely add content until it meets the standard. We can create a stubs heading for the normal and talk pages to help drive the content into the right direction. The stubs file in the talk pages can contain the checklist, where the normal page can have a stubs file requesting information. --Hinney 23:31, 4 November 2007 (PST)
Instance Categories
I noted that I forgot to add Raid Instances to the instance categories. Now that I look over the page again... why are all four different types of instances listed in the category that is essentially just for one of these instance types, namely world instances? Then again, why is this the world instances category, when the name says it's the "Instances" category? I think this is largely my doing, since I wrote up the division of instance types here. I've thought a way to fix this issue.
First I figured, why not create a new Instance types page, and drop all the information about them onto that new page? This would work, but it wouldn't provide a solution to the question "why is this the world instance category, when the name says it's the instances category?".
What I've thought of here involves a fair bit more work than just moving a few paragraphs from this page, but makes more sense by providing a solid solution to the question above. Why not create a few new categories, as sub-categories of Category:Instances? This would mean:
- The basic information about what an instance is, as well as what the different categories are, would remain on this page.
- Each of the four categories would be created, if they don't exist already: Category:World Instances, Category:Quest Instances, Category:Public Dungeons, Category:Raids
- The List of Instances and Instances by Level would be moved to the World instances category.
- Public Dungeons would be moved to Category:Public Dungeons.
- All instances listed on this page would be re-categorized to Category:World Instances.
- I'm not sure about the Category:Quest Instances listed above, since quests are not something I've looked into much. Perhaps someone who has more experience there can tell me whether such a category would be useful and worth implementing at all? If not, then Quest instances would just remain commented as "For Quest Instances, see the corresponding quest."

- I noticed that "Quest Instances" is already a category under quests - Category:Instance Quests, so that answers my question. I'm going to go ahead and get the changes listed above done. --Fedaykin 20:15, 6 November 2007 (PST)
Instance Template
I would like to build on a discussion started here. I made a rudimentary "template" for instances and bosses back when I started here, but it just isn't efficient when it comes to implementing changes. In light of this, I would like to request that someone who is skilled at coding begins work on a proper template for current and future Instance articles, as well as a template for Raids and Boss articles. Since this will likely be a whole ton of work, I'd suggest starting with the Instance article template. If anyone is up to the task, let everyone know here. I may learn how to code these templates myself eventually, but by eventually I mean it would take ages for anything to really happen. --Fedaykin 19:56, 30 October 2007 (PDT)
- Done Template:Infobox Mob. Can you add some text to the middle section that explains or limits the values for each field --20:48, 30 October 2007 (PDT)
I've encountered a little issue with the template. Right now it doesn't limit the image size, so for large images like the one on Castellan Wisdan (just remove the comment code around the image, then preview) it looks way too large. Would it be possible to limit the image size in the template to 300 pixels, so that it automatically re-sizes the linked images if they are too large? --Fedaykin 17:25, 7 November 2007 (PST)
Mobs
Looking at the long list of mobs in articles such as Fornost, I think we need to find a way around this. On top of that, the table I dumped them into just makes it look messy. Perhaps we could find a more compact, organized way to display the mob names? An idea I had was to make an expandable headline (ie. only the headline is visible unless the user chooses to expand it to view all the mob names). Hopefully this can get sorted out nicely. --Fedaykin 22:46, 18 October 2007 (PDT)
- You can look into CategoryTree Extension to have it auto expand. or you could use a the category page that you can expand the subcategories .
- For Example:

- Interesting... I will take a deeper look into this when I have some more spare time. --Fedaykin 20:18, 31 October 2007 (PDT)
