This page is about Bears that are creatures. For Lore-master pets, see Bear (Lore-master)

Bears are large, powerful animals found throughout the forests, mountains, and wooded hill-lands of Middle-earth. Though they are part of the natural order and do not serve any dark power, their immense strength and unpredictable temperament make them among the most dangerous ordinary beasts a traveler may encounter.

Bears are generally solitary and territorial, spending much of their time foraging or roaming within well-established ranges. While many bears will warn intruders with bluffs, roars, or charges before attacking, they should never be underestimated. A startled or provoked bear can react with sudden and overwhelming violence, capable of killing even heavily armed foes through sheer strength alone.

Across Middle-earth, bears are respected as symbols of raw power and untamed wilderness. They are not malicious, but neither are they forgiving of carelessness. Those who travel through bear country learn quickly that the wild does not need servants of the Enemy to be deadly, and that even the most natural creatures can be as dangerous as any monster when their domain is challenged.
