Éomund was the Chief Marshal of the Riddermark and a renowned captain of the Rohirrim during the late Third Age. A lord of the Eastfold and father of Éomer and Éowyn, he was widely respected for his courage and skill in battle. Éomund was slain in TA. 3002 while pursuing Orcs near the East Wall, an event that left a lasting mark upon the history of Rohan and upon those who served him.

Éomund was a nobleman of the Eastfold and a lord of Aldburg, the ancient seat of the House of Eorl. In time he rose to become the Chief Marshal of the Riddermark, commanding the Riders of Rohan in defence of the Mark's eastern borders. During this period the lands along the East Wall were frequently troubled by Orc-raids from the mountains, and Éomund was known for his readiness to ride swiftly against such threats. Éomund wed the sister of King Théoden, strengthening his ties to the royal house of Rohan. Together they had two children: Éomer, who would later become the Third Marshal of the Mark and eventually King of Rohan, and Éowyn, who would become Lady of Rohan and later Princess of Ithilien.

As Chief Marshal, Éomund commanded the éoreds responsible for defending the eastern marches of the Riddermark. His household included many warriors who later became prominent Riders, including men such as Léofdag, son of Winedag, who served in his company during his later campaigns. Éomund was known among the Rohirrim for his boldness and willingness to ride against the enemies of the Mark even with small companies of warriors. His reputation as a fearless commander won him the loyalty of his riders, but it also led him to take risks in battle that sometimes left his forces exposed.

In TA. 3002, Éomund rode forth with a small company of riders to pursue a band of Orcs that had descended from the mountains near the East Wall. The Orcs lured the Marshal and his men into an ambush. Surrounded and overwhelmed, nearly all of Éomund's companions were slain. Among those present was Léofdag, who attempted to defend his lord during the attack. Though wounded, Léofdag survived the battle and carried Éomund's body back to Aldburg. His return as the sole survivor brought him great shame among the Riders, and the event cast a shadow over his later service.

Éomund's death deprived Rohan of one of its most capable commanders and left his children orphaned while still young. After his passing, the position of Marshal of the Mark was later filled by others, including Elfhelm of Faldham. Éomund's memory endured strongly among the Rohirrim. His son Éomer followed in his footsteps as a great warrior and commander, eventually becoming one of the most renowned leaders of Rohan. His daughter Éowyn likewise achieved great renown during the War of the Ring. The place where Éomund fell is remembered as Éomund's End, a memorial located in the Sutcrofts of East Rohan. The site is marked by a banner of the Rohirrim flanked by braziers, commemorating the Marshal who died defending the Mark from the Orcs. Among the Riders of Rohan, Éomund remained a symbol of the courage and sacrifice expected of those who ride in defence of the Riddermark.
