Varda

Varda is the queen of the Valar and wife of Manwë.

Among the Elves, she is better known as Elbereth Gilthoniel, and they invoke her name in times of fear to bring hope and renewal.

The reason for this is that Varda is the Light-bringer, the creator of the stars the Elves first beheld when they awoke in Cuiviénen.

The Star-lady was also called Snow-white by the Elves, because of her physical form glowing brightly with a white light.

Varda was responsible for creating the Two Lamps to bring her light to all of Arda, and was devastated when Melkor destroyed them.

When she expected the wakening of the Elves, she gathered the dew from Telperion the Great Tree of Silver, and set the dew alight in the sky in constellations.

After Morgoth and Ungoliant destroyed the Two Trees, Varda created the Moon and the Sun from their last parts. She thus put them out of reach from Morgoth to destroy as he had the Lamps and the Trees.

She also created from Eärendil the most sacred of stars in the sky after he sailed to Valinor to warn the Valar of Morgoth's evils.
