Quest:Challenge: Gaerdring and Gaerthel
|Starts at||Great Barrow: The Maze|
|Start Region||Southern Barrow-downs|
|Quest Group||Great Barrows|
|Walkthrough & Notes|
At the start of the fight, only Gaerdring will go active. After you kill 20 crawlers, Gaerthel will also activate. When both brothers are active, they each gain a shield ability - Gaerdring's is damage absorption, while Gaerthel's is damage reflection. To avoid having to deal with these, the group should weaken Gaerdring as much as possible before killing the 20th crawler, then kill the last one and immediately finish Gaerdring off before he can activate his shield. Avoid using bleeds or DoTs when Gaerdring gets low on health, just in case he manages to get his shield up.
While this is going on, the Grim Tomb-wights need to be kept alive and off the rest of the group, so bring an off-tank to pick them up and kite them around the room. The safest approach is to have the main tank pull Gaerdring over to a corner (the southwest staircase works well for this since it's furthest from where the grims spawn) and have the off-tank kite the grims in a wide circle around the rest of the room and the other two staircases, to keep them out of AoE range of the rest of the group.
The main tank and DPS should use single-target skills if grims get close to avoid picking them up. The healer should only heal as much as necessary to avoid generating too much threat from the grims, and may have to move around to avoid any crawlers that aggro on them. If anyone accidentally picks up a grim, they should bring it over into the off-tank's path until the off-tank can pull it off. The off-tank can use the best tier of Coffee available to minimize damage from the grims while kiting.
If all goes well, Gaerdring will fall before activating his shield and the tank can pick up Gaerthel and bring him over to the group. If the shield does go up, though, everyone needs to stop DPS (press F1) until it goes away. Any bleeds, DoTs, or auto-attacks will quickly heal Gaerthel back up to full health. The off-tank will need to pick up Gaerthel and kite him along with the grims until the group can finish dealing with Gaerdring.
The ancient Dead have arisen within the Great Barrow.
Gaerthel will come to his brother's aid if enough decayed have fallen in battle and none of the tomb-wights have been defeated. Once in battle, both brothers must meet their defeat before any tomb-wights do.
Gaerdring and Gaerthel, ancient warrior brothers, have arisen deep within the maze of the Great Barrow.
Gaerthel will enter the battle early if sufficiently taunted.
Defeat the brothers together.
