Proposed merged page
This is the proposed merged "Guidelines" page ... To be linked from Main page -- Guidelines -- Categorization Guideline
Note: The page has been (re)written as a "final" page rather than a discussion page. Consequently, I've stated things as "fact" rather than "opinion." (Which may be a bit of a stretch in some cases.)
This page started out as a "simple" combining of the two pre-existing "guidelines" pages on "categorization," tagged for merging.
Boy was that a bone-headed idea!!!
I quickly realized that neither page really provided information about the subject, let alone covered "all" the issues involved.
Consequently, this page quickly evolved into a combination of "documenting what exists" and a "How To" for Editors.
Keep in mind this is a "write-as-I-discover/learn-something" work. (i.e. which is even more confused than a stream-of-consciousness writing.)
The document is actually lightly structured and still evolving... into more of an overall "contribution" How To" -- titles welcome.
"Obviously," Comments, Questions, Criticisms, Rewrites are all welcome.

Random thoughts
- (I suspect that there is some way to determine "HOW" this WIKI is used, but I do not know the tools to do so. "Measurement" is "yet another" topic.)
- (The internal WIKI search engine may or may not be used... it definitely produces different results than Google, Bing or Yahoo. Search is a whole different kettle of fish, as such, not of interest here.)
Questions
- are example1 and example 2 (Creating New Articles)
- A)Accurate
- B)Current practice
- C)Desired practice
To-do
- Templates section -- Definitely need help to expand this section from someone with a deeper, more thorough understanding of the subject.
- Boilerplates section -- Definitely need help to expand this section from someone with a deeper, more thorough understanding of the subject.
- There do appear to be consistency issues between, Templates, Boilerplates and the "create pages," as well as many undocumented Templates.
- Things "to do" I encounter necessary to make the various categorizations consistent:
- There do appear to be consistency issues between, Templates, Boilerplates and the "create pages," as well as many undocumented Templates.
- Eliminate the sub categories of Geography:
-
- Allowing all of their subcategories to "roll-up" into the main Geography category -- This would eliminate a "layer" without expanding the top level category ridiculously. (It would still be one of the smallest categories.) It would also be consistent with other entries in Geography.
-
- Change/update these sub categories (of the above) to point directly to Geography:
- ---
- ---
- Category:Landmarks and
Category:Locationsare also redundant.- Landmarks (the smaller -5 pages - 15 subcategories) should be rolled-over into Locations (the larger - 575 pages - 27 subcategories)
- Yes,
Category:Locationsis redundant but now also made "obsolete". Still much to do to empty it but work is progressing just nicely. The time-sinks are to find related quests, to find NPCs that are categorized for a larger area than the smallest possible, to sift through articles bloated with irrelevant links, and to sift through what-links-here (but these days I "disable" the navigation template for a while :P ). The time for that also to also update what I find them with geographical data. But overall progress is steady :) - -- Zimoon 19:03, 4 November 2011 (EDT)
- Hmmm... I seem to have discovered a bug with the syntax: #<li value="4">. It is inserting an additional 1. line ahead of the correct one.
- Yeah, looks like a bug, I tweaked it to not use the HTML syntax, format is slightly different but it might work --Lotroadmin (talk) 21:21, 21 June 2011 (EDT)
