There must be something in the air ...
See the recently (like "yesterday") revision of Lotro-Wiki.com:Categorization (Project page) and Lotro-Wiki Categorization (Guidelines) where I started to deal with that particular issue -- namely "DOCUMENTING and DEFINING" things.
The project page isn't much different than it was. However, the "Guidelines" page is extensively re-worked. I merged the two pages which had been sitting around with merge tags for a year... and simply picked one of the two as the recipient, Categorization Guideline was the looser. But the page name is arbitrary and easily changed. I was basically defining what was where for the Editor, and under Tools defined Boilerplates.
The Boiler plate section begins:
- Tip: Each Template has an entry in the Boilerplates section of the Help page which contains the documentation of the template. This can be referred to in another browser tab or window while creating the Article when you have "previewed" your article.
- A Boilerplate is a page layout which documents a Template and the basic layout for a particular type of article.
- It may also contain multiple template references for more complex Articles requiring and utilizing multiple templates.
This definition strikes at the dichotomy which you are describing. Again, I was primarily trying to document and codify current usage.
Also, last year I started doing some other documentation "previewing" User:Magill/Sandbox-Help:Getting Started editing or creating pages down near the bottom I have a section: "Seth's explanations"
So, there are definitely a bunch of ideas floating around in the Ether!
As I see it, we have approximately 30 days in which to deal with this sort of thing. On September 5 RoR rolls out, and everyone's attention will be aimed at that. I think that last year's "causes-interruptus" was RoI :)
