Description
Physical Description: Medium build, stands 6 feet tall with brown hair and a beard. Mateuis wields a spear and shield, and isn't half bad with a bow. He is very defensive and can withstand many big hits or multiple enemies at once. He is not afraid to draw enemies onto himself and can recover quickly from most things thrown his way. While he is very defensive, he is also very quick, able to parry, block, and evade many attacks. Mateuis is also deceptively good at damaging opponents, and can kill enemies quite quickly.
Personality Description: Mateuis is very reserved, very strong for his size and is often underestimated. He is very kind and cares more for the protection of others than anything else. While he kind and friendly in person, he is a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.
Bio
Mateuis is the leader of The Last Watch and former captain in the Army of Osgiliath. Mateuis grew up in Breeland, but his descendants are that of the fallen kingdowm of Arnor, and the Dunedain, whom he was trained in combat by for much of his youth. At the fall of Annuminas, his family fled south to Breeland, but his mother and father were killed in the escape. Few of the group that fled south to Bree from Annuminas survived, and Mateuis was left an orphan as a young adult. A local farmer named Richard took him in and raised him through the rest of young adulthood in a homestead near Archet. Mateuis took frequent trips throughout Eriador learning everything he could in order to defend Bree from evil. On his travels he met the elfmaiden Kira from Lothlorien, whom he wed and spent many years with. Eventually a brigand group called the Blackwolds took Richard for not giving them protection payments as the Blackwolds had invaded and taken over areas near Archet. Enraged, Mateuis did everything he could to thwart the Blackwolds, and fought his way through several Blackwold camps but was eventually overwhelmed and taken captive. During this time Kira had become pregant with their son Galdiras, but was unable to tell Mateuis of their child as he was imprisoned in the Blackwold camp. Kira raised the child in Lothlorien, but was killed while helping the dwarves and Balin retake Moria when Galdiras was but a year or two old. Galdiras grew up in Lothlorien, but never really knew his mother as she had died when he was very young, and his father was missing for many years. During his search he traveled to Forochel, where he furthered his training to become a hunter by the Lossoth. After a few years in captivity, Mateuis was rescued by the now King of Gondor, Aragorn. Aragorn had heard of Mateuis's efforts and that he was a descendant of Arnor, and looked to unite the peoples of Eriador with his help. After thwarting the Blackwolds, Mateuis was sent to help Osgiliath against the armies of Mordor. During his time there, several other heroes from different races joined the Army of Osgiliath and became fast friends; these heroes being Grimkeltan the dwarf champion from the Lonely Mountain, Shekhine the elf hunter from Mirkwood, Vamiro the captain from Gondor, Henry and Georgia Bankshaft who were loremasters from Breeland, Winnston the captain from Gondor, and Forakattack the dwarf Runekeeper from the Misty Mountains. Mateuis was also joined by his son Galdiras, who had spent many years trying to find his father, who had been missing and whose whereabouts were unknown after being rescued from the Blackwold camp. After a couple of years in Osgiliath, Mateuis was called back to Eriador by Aragorn and was entrusted with ridding the evil from Eriador and destroying the False King Mordirith in Angmar. At this request Mateuis and the rest of his friends formed The Last Watch, which sought to fulfill Lord Aragorn's request as well as watch over all of Middle Earth and its peoples. After ridding Eriador of Mordirith, Mateuis and Galdiras helped the dwarves reclaim Moria and start the rebuilding process.
A short time after the adventures in Moria, Mateuis was called to Lothlorien to help defend it from the orcs and goblins of Mirkwood, Moria, and the Misty Mountains. After a successful victory, Mateuis would go on to lead the Invasion of Mirkwood at the request of Galadriel. Teaming up with the Hidden Guard, the deep rooted evil was finally purged from Dol Guldur. Almost immediately after the Invasion, Lord Elrond called Mateuis to Rivendell where Elrond tasked him with gathering the Dunedain Rangers, in order to ride to Aragorn's aide in Rohan and Gondor. The group of rangers was christened the Grey Company, and traveled from Rivendell through Eregion, Enedwaith, and Dunland on their way to Gondor, uniting as many people as they could to their cause along the way, along with Elrond's sons, Elrohir and Elladan. After a few run ins with some unfriendly dunlendings, the Grey Company learned of an ancient curse which haunted the men of the mountain until they fulfilled their oath to the last king of Gondor. The Mateuis and the rangers sought to use this broken oath and curse by calling upon the hillmen for aide, knowing they would have to answer the call, or never be able to rest. The Grey Company forged a replica of Aragorn's ring of Barahir. The ranger Candaith from the Lone Lands wore the ring in order to trick the men of the mountain into aiding them, claiming he was the heir of Isildur. The spirits of the men of the mountain saw through the ruse and turned on the rangers, killing almost the whole company who had ventured into the mountain where the spirits dwelled, except for Mateuis, Radanir, Halbarad. Candaith was slain by the mountain men spirits. After the betrayel of the spirits, the Grey Company had found out that Saruman had learned of the Grey Company and sought to put an end to them. After gaining several Dunlending tribes favor, the Grey Company and Mateuis traveled to the Falcon clan's town in East Dunlend, helping them prepare for the upcoming battle against Saruman and his orcs. Nearing the end of the preparations, the leader of the Falcon Clan, Lhou Brenin, announced that they had captured Saruman's main emissary from Isengard, the one responsible for turning most of the Dunlending clans to Saruman. Mateuis and Lothrandir were asked to come speak with the emissary as they could maybe get some useful information out of him to use to their advantage. Upon arriving at the cell, both Mateuis and Lothrandir realized that the emissary was already dead, and immediately suspected something was wrong. Mateuis and Lothrandir continued to act normal, but had their hands on their weapons as they approached the cell door. Almost immediatly the two Dunlending guards sprung at them with weapons drawn. The guards were easily dispatched, but more guards were flooding the prison. Both Mateuis and Lothrandir slew many guards, but were eventually overwhelmed and taken captive, and sent to Isengard and its prison. The Grey company were betrayed by the Falcon clan, who had been corrupted by Saruman. A battle ensued with many casualties on both sides. The Rangers were forced to flee, with many of them being captured, including Golodir, the sons of Elrond, and Halbarad. Radanir and Saerdan escaped, but Braigar was slain in the fighting. Mateuis spent several weeks in Isengard along with Lothrandir, both who were interrogated by Saruman himself. Mateuis was able to resist his mind being pried by Saruman by sheer willpower, which enraged Saruman. Lothrandir was next to be pried, but Mateuis never learned his fate. Mateuis would eventually escape Isengard by earning the trust of the orc captain Morflak, and with the help of a few other prisoners. During the escape, Mateuis was knocked unconscious, but was carried to saftey by a prisoner whom he had become friends with during his time there. The prisoner was able to hide Mateuis in a cave before he diverted the orcs and sacrificed himself so Mateuis would not be found. Mateuis returned to the Falcon Clan camp after he awoke, and at the front of the town he met with Saerdan and those rangers who had escaped, as well as Prince Theodred of Rohan. Together they were able to free the remaining rangers and cause the Falcon clan to retreat deep into Dunland. TBC
