EARLY LIFE
Kandral’s parents, Kundrin East-friend and Dagrún Ravenlocks, married in Dunland. They were two young dwarves who had witnessed the destruction of Erebor by the dragon Smaug some fourteen years earlier and had joined the royal family on their wanderings through Eriador. When Dagrún was pregnant with Kandral the couple decided to settle down permanently, so Kundrin took a job as a teacher in the Iron Hills Hall Járnfast. When they crossed the Misty Mountains a warg pack attacked their caravan and the couple was forced to flee north into the Grey Mountains, hoping to reach the Iron Hills this way. The next day, earlier than expected, Kandral was born just south of the ruins of Thikil-Gundu in the Grey Mountains. It was the year 2784 of the Third Age.
LIFE AS A YOUNG DWARROW - Age 14 to 68
After the battle of Azanulbizar in 2799, which Kandral’s father fought in and survived, several dwarves that did not follow the Royal Line to the Blue Mountains, nor join the mining towns in the Iron Hills but came to the Grey Mountains, eager to find riches. So did Kandral’s uncle Muninn, brother to his mother Dagrún. Muninn was given Lordship over the mines of the region of Thikil-Gundu. Life there was unbearably heard and dangerous. In the hope for the young dwarf to learn through hardship his father regularly sent him to Muninn’s Grey Mountain mines, where he would meet with his cousins, Duinn and Kuinn. In 2812 Kandral was sent to live with his uncle Muninn, where he joined the Grey Guards (the guards assigned to protecting the mines) and later attended the newly formed Grey Mountain Military Academy; which he completed five years later in 2817. Like his father though Kandral did not take to the life of a soldier, but rather that of a scholar.
ADULTHOOD – Age 69
In the year 2853 of the Third Age, Kundrin allowed his son Kandral to depart from the Grey Mountains and join a company. Kandral, then 69 years of age, moved to Thorin’s Hall in the Blue Mountains. Eager to find riches of his own and build his own mansion, he joined a merchant company owned by the wealthy Longbeard trader Bralin that trafficked between Thorin’s Halls, the other Blue Mountain settlements and Needlehole. Skilled in languages, Kandral quickly became the dwarf that would negotiate with those that didn’t speak the common tongue, be they elves or Blue Mountain traders.
YEARS IN THE SHIRE - Age 89
After twenty years in service with Bralin, Kandral left the company and settled in Needlehole. There he took up his passion for brewing, founding the Dwarrow Needlehole Brewery in 2874. Skilled in his brewing trade and having a keen sense for business, he sold traditional dwarf-style ales to taverns throughout Ered Luin and the Shire. The hobbit tavern keepers were pleased to add it to their menu, considering the large number of dwarf traders that passed through the Shire. Many of the hobbit tavern keepers he met in those days became close friends. His love for food and pipeweed no doubt dated back to those days. One hobbit tavern keep, Sancho Hopsbloom of Frogmorton, became a very close friend and taught Kandral the art of cooking. Soon Kandral would sell dwarvish delights at the Needlehole, Gondamon and Thorin’s Hall market. Yet, his love for books never left him. One day in 2883, returning to his father in the Iron Hills to show a rare scroll he found while doing business in Gondamon, his eye fell on Buhni, daughter of General Buhrin Firefist. He fell in love and wished to marry her, yet the General wished his daughter to marry a warrior, not a brewer/cook who spent his free time in dusty libraries. Even the 40 years spent as a guard and miner in the unforgiving Grey Mountains couldn’t sway the general.
RETURN TO THE GREY MOUNTAINS - Age 100
Kandral knew that the only way to convince the General to let him marry the daughter was to show his skills in battle. So in 2884 he sold his home in Needlehole, including the brewery and lucrative market rights and returned to the Grey Mountains. For four years Kandral trained with double handed axe and with shield and axe, honing his skill as a warrior. When he returned to the Iron Hills he was at last accepted to the Firefist battalion lead by the General himself. On patrol in the Iron Hills his warrior skills were tested when the battalion was attacked by a group of Orcs. There Kandral saved the life of the general and was given permission to marry his daughter. Buhni and Kandral had three children - Kandur born in 2893, Kandrin in 2903 and a daughter Bjarma in 2913. When Kandral’s father Kundrin died of old age in 2908, Kandral decided to take up the family business once more and became a scholar and a teacher, specializing in teaching Khuzdul to young dwarves. Both Kandral’s sons entered the military academy in the Grey Mountains, as their father had done. Kandral and his family lived in Jarnfast till 2942 when they moved to Erebor after it had been reclaimed. His mother Dagrún, who had lived with Kandral after the death of his father Kundrin, had died 3 years earlier in 2939, and sadly did not witness "the great return".
EREBOR – Age 158
When Erebor was reclaimed many families once again returned to the Lonely Mountain and there was a great need for Khuzdul teachers, as many dwarves no longer mastered the ancient tongue. Kandral’s reputation as a scholar and linguist had by then grown and King Dáin asked Kandral to become the teacher for the Royal house, instructing the Prince Thorin Stonehelm and many of the younger dwarves of the Royal household. Kandral’s children reached the travel ready age and both his sons left Erebor. Kandur took up a merchant post in Bree, while Kandrin became a commander in the Blue Mountains as part of the Longbeard Defence of Thorin’s Halls.
NEEDLEHOLE AND THORIN’s HALL – Age 215
In the year 2999, after 57 years of loyal service to the King, Kandral stepped down as Royal scholar and agreed with his wife to return to Needlehole and spend his years in retirement. Yet his wife, not used to the hobbit way of life, longed to return to dwarvish halls. And at the same time Kandral longed to teach once more. So it was that they moved to the homestead of Ulfirth in Thorin’s Hall the year after their move to Needlehole. There Kandral met with his cousin Duinn, who lead the kinship of Durin’s Folk in the West. Gladly he accepted the post of Lore Zabad within the kinship.
FATHERHOOD ONCE MORE – Age 233
In the year 3017, Kandral and Buhni agreed to adopt a young girl by the name of Thrandili, barely in her fourties. Her life had been hard and Kandral felt the girl needed a stable home, while Buhni was glad to see a new chance of motherhood return, since her youngest child Bjarma moved out in 3003 when she married Alfunard, a trusty treasure keeper of the kinship.
PRESENT DAY
By the time of this writing, in 3019 of the Third Age, Kandral has risen in the ranks of Durin's Folk, replacing his cousin Duinn as the new Uzbad of the kinship. Kandral, a dwarf, of whom his kinsmen often say has spent far too much time with hobbits.. you might find him on your travels, if you do, do not hesitate to salute this son of Kundrin.
