Toads are stout, warty amphibians found in wetlands, swamps, marshes, and other damp environments throughout Middle-earth. Larger than frogs and often less agile, they are primarily nocturnal and favor dark, hidden places. Some tales speak of enormous toads inhabiting remote caverns or swamps, reportedly large enough to swallow a Hobbit or Dwarf whole.

Toads can secrete toxins from their skin, making them dangerous to handle or disturb. Though normally slow and defensive, they will bite or lash out when threatened, posing a risk to unwary travelers. Despite this, many toads go unnoticed in their habitats, performing their ecological role as insect predators.

Background

Toads do not appear as distinct creatures in the work of J.R.R. Tolkien. Their depiction here is based on common amphibian folklore and naturalistic behavior, emphasizing their role as both pest and predator in Middle-earth’s wetlands.
