Tar-Meneldur was the fifth King of Númenor and father of Tar-Aldarion.
Unlike both his father and his son, Tar-Meneldur was not particularly interested in the sea, but rather spent much of his life star-gazing.
His son's proclivity for sailing was cause for much annoyance by Tar-Meneldur, and he eventually forbid the cutting of lumber on Númenor, hoping to curtail the building of new ships. Instead, this inspired his son to seek for Middle-earth even more, in order to get lumber from those shores.
In 882, Tar-Meneldur received a letter from King Gil-galad warning him of a rising threat in the East. This caused the King to abdicate his throne to his son, since Tar-Aldarion had closer grasp on the events of Middle-earth.
