Quest Talk:Volume III, Book 10: Foreword

Should this even exist? I'm watching Andang's playthrough and it jumps straight from "Book 9, Chapter 9: The Dividing Line" to "Book 10, Chapter 1: Exiles" without any "Foreword" in between. Furthermore, the "Bestowal Dialogue" for "Book 10, Chapter 1: Exiles" seems to be exactly that shown here. Has something changed in how the Quests were laid out since this page was created? - People who create videos rarely create that video on their first attempt! Not to mention that most are edited, not true "recordings" of what actually happened on their fitst attempt.
- Many times things like "forwards" never re-appear after you have begun the initial sequence. I.e. if you cancel a quest and start over so now that you know what happens, you can record the sequence (and show how masterful you are).
- There is also a tendency on the part of "recorders" to skip what they consider boreing or redundant parts.
- The only way to tell is for you to play-through the sequence yourself -- taking many screen shots as you progress, so that you can refer back to them later when you actually write-up the quest.
- Am I being cynical? Yes, but it is a cynacism borne of whatching this kind of thing over the 9 years of LOTRO and comparing my experiences to that from the videos.
- The other point about Forwards. They frequently only exist if you had completed the previous (usually) Book before the update containing the new Book comes out. The Forward provides a mechanic to get you to the correct place to continue the questing sequence. If, however, you go straight from Book 9 to book 10, you do not need a Forward, because you are already interacting at the correct location to begin the next book. Consequently, you are never offered it.
- This mechanic has also been used Frequently by Turbine to link-in new content. Most recently with both the Old Anórien ( Introduction: Old Anórien) and Far Anórien ( Introduction: Far Anórien) updates. They are usually Automatic Bestowal quests, which pop-up the first time you log-in after the update. If you don't accept the quest at that time, but cancle it, it is not offered to you again.
- My alt has done book 9, but not started book 10 yet. So I went to Entwade to check this out. Both Horn or Corudan offers Chapter 1, but none of them offers this quest. Never got any quest from mail or elsewhere either, and this page does say it should start from Horn (which wouldn't make sense if it was a vector quest, since chapter 1 starts from Horn too).
- With my main I always obsess about doing every single quest, and I did this book sometime not too soon after it was released. So I checked his completed quests, and this one is not is not there.
- Comparing Foreword from this page and Chapter 1 from the game client, it does seem like Foreword is simply a duplicate; same bestowal dialogue, same background, etc.
- Perhaps the quest once were available in some specific scenario, but even if that is the case, I very much doubt that the information on this page is correct. Wouldn't make sense if they had a Foreword starting from the same guy as Chapter 1 and even having the same objectives and text as Chapter 1. --Grimfrithgar (talk) 00:39, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- Might that be because you have already completed Book 9, so you're ready to start Book 10 and you get Chapter 1. I'm watching someone else who's actually delaying the Epic Quests in favour of showing off each zone, and I think he might have been offered a Foreword to a book he wasn't anywhere near starting yet… —NotACat (talk) 08:10, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
- Forgot to mention, but I also tried it on alt who is currently on book 6 of volume 3, and the NPCs at Entwade are phased out, so I can't pick up chapter 1 or even see them.
- However... I stumbled accross this thread on the forums, which I actually remember reading before: https://forums-old.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?&postid=6790952
- Conclusion: The quest was autobestow and buggy. Dev MadeOfLions talked about completely removing it from the game, and his last words were "Now I just need to figure out how to safely remove it from the people that did manage to get it.". If that ever happened, I have no idea. But it's unlikely that there is a way to get the quest now.
- It still seems that the information on this page is (at least partly) incorrect, but I'm not sure what I expected with that "Under Construction!"-banner ;)
- Ideally it would be nice if someone who have done the quest could check if it still exist, and update this page as needed. But that might be asking for too much at this stage. --Grimfrithgar (talk) 10:11, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

- Thanks for that link Grimfrithgar -- I've modified the Walkthrough box to explain what happened.
- This quest existed at one time and was apparently removed from the game by MoL because of bug issues:

- "... the Foreword in this case is just a way to remind people where Book 9 ended, rather than a significant addition to the story."-- MadeOfLions May 13, 2013
- "... Its sole reason for being was to remind people that Book 9 ended at the crossing of the Entwash, in the Sutcrofts -- that's all it does. It's supposed to bestow when you're Level 85 and have finished III.9.9, but since it isn't doing that consistently it's dead to me." -- MadeOfLions May 16, 2013
- The content is now a duplicate of Quest: Chapter 1: Exiles.
