Mammoth

Mammoths are enormous, fur-covered beasts with long trunks and sweeping ivory tusks, native to the frigid regions of Middle-earth, including Forochel and the Misty Mountains. Towering above other creatures of the north, they are both majestic and powerful, able to traverse snowbound plains, icy valleys, and mountainous terrain with surprising agility for their size.

These creatures are generally non-aggressive, relying on their immense bulk and intimidating tusks to deter threats. When threatened, mammoths may display defensive behaviors, such as trumpeting, stomping, or charging, but they seldom attack unprovoked. Some northern tribes, such as the Lossoth, have domesticated mammoths for use as pack animals and for hauling heavy loads across the frozen wastes.

Mammoths are long-lived and social, occasionally gathering near specific sites when dying, creating natural "graveyards" where their bones contribute to the landscape; one notable example is Norsu-hauta near the Icereave Mines. These beasts are presumed to be distantly related to the southern Mûmakil (Oliphaunts), the colossal war-beasts of Harad, suggesting a common ancestry of massive pachyderms across Middle-earth.
