Malvegil
Malvegil (T.A. ?–1349) was the ninth King of Arthedain, ruling during a period of growing peril in Eriador. He was the father of Arveleg I and grandfather of Araphor.
History
Malvegil succeeded to the throne of Arthedain sometime before T.A. 1300. His reign coincided with the rise of the Witch-king of Angmar, who established his realm in the far north during this period. From that time onward, the Dúnedain of the North faced constant threat from Angmar and its allies.
Malvegil sought to defend his realm by fortifying the northern frontiers. Among these efforts was the establishment of Carnoglin (later known as Ost Galumar) as a forward outpost on the North Downs. According to later accounts, the fortress was built with the aid of Dwarves led by Thorhaddur, symbolizing the friendship between Arthedain and its Dwarven allies.
By the end of his reign, Angmar’s strength continued to grow, and Rhudaur fell under the sway of Hill-men allied with the Witch-king. Malvegil died in T.A. 1349, leaving his son Arveleg I to inherit the throne and the defense of a kingdom increasingly hard-pressed.
Legacy
Though little else is recorded of his reign, Malvegil was remembered as the King of Arthedain at the time Angmar first revealed itself as a great power. His fortifications, including Ost Galumar, reflected his attempts to resist the rising shadow, but it fell to his heirs to bear the brunt of Angmar’s assaults.
