On Lotro-Wiki, sockpuppetry, or socking, refers to the misuse of multiple Lotro-Wiki accounts. To maintain accountability and increase community trust, users are generally expected to use only one account. While there are some valid reasons for maintaining multiple accounts, it is improper to use multiple accounts to deceive or mislead other editors, users or admins, disrupt discussions, distort consensus, avoid sanctions, evade blocks, or otherwise violate our Code of Conduct and policies.

Sockpuppetry takes various forms:

  • Creating new accounts to avoid detection, sanctions or blocks
  • Using another person's account
  • Reviving old unused accounts (sometimes referred to as sleepers) and presenting them as different users
  • Persuading friends or colleagues to create accounts for the purpose of supporting one side of a dispute.

Misuse of multiple accounts is a serious breach of community trust. It may lead up to a permanent ban for all related users and accounts.

Legitimate uses

Valid reasons for having multiple accounts include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Bot Accounts
  • Test Accounts
  • Accounts created due to loss of access to original account. In this case, please let an admin know and we can do a user merge to give you credit for past contributions.

Reporting suspected sockpuppets

In the event you believe a user is using multiple accounts please report it to lotroadmin. All reports will be reviewed and investigated and will result in a response that is deemed necessary and appropriate to the circumstances.
