Despite wiki capitilization rules, Turbine has chosen to go their own way: File:Rune-Inscribed Brass Earring tt.jpg
I should clarify, my stance has always been that we try to match the in-game content as closely as possible. This included capitalization inconsistencies and spelling and grammer errors.
I think the character after the dash should be lower case, but ... RingTailCat (talk) 02:45, 27 October 2011 (EDT)
- Personally I am very pragmatic but if we have a consensus to follow in-game capitalization, then move the page to proper cases. Search works either way. -- Zimoon 04:00, 27 October 2011 (EDT)
- We actually have the rule to follow in-game capitalization apart from when Turbine makes a mistake with capitalization after "-", or so I was told when I was a young contributor trying to make the page Guldur-Spirit (same Turbine mistake there). This page should stay with the lower case. We should probably add this recurrent problem to Help:Names. --Ravanel (talk) 05:56, 27 October 2011 (EDT)
- Does anyone have any idea as to why Turbine uses hyphens so often? Is it technical, style, someone's personal preference, whim of the developers? Does it have anything to do with multi-languages? RingTailCat (talk) 07:03, 27 October 2011 (EDT)
- Not sure but I have an impression that Europeans as such use hyphens more "to bind" words together, certainly when it is not clear how it should be read out properly. In this particular case there is no ambiguity but indeed the earring is inscribed by rune-script, and personally I feel it should read Rune-inscribed because it is kind of one compound of words rather than two separate words, the worse case would be Brass Earring Inscribed by Runes :P -- Zimoon 09:01, 27 October 2011 (EDT)
Just wanted to note the following: I was aware when creating this page that the in-game spelling has both words capitalized.
I've noticed that they tend to do this when the second word begins with "I"; eg, Rune-Inscribed, Forged-Iron. I did discuss this in chat with Seth. I chose to use the standard wiki capitalization because NORMALLY the opposite of today's conversation happens. That is to say, if I had chosen to go with the in-game capitalization, normally, someone would see both words capitalized, and would assume that I was ignorant of (or not following) the wiki capitalization rules, and would alter the name to follow wiki rules. In today's case, a very rare situation, the editor (you, RTC), knew that the in-game capitalization did not follow the wiki rules, and here we are chatting about it.
As far as hyphenation is concerned, according to The Chicago Manual of Style (section 7.808)
- 7.80Hyphens and readability
A hyphen can make for easier reading by showing structure and, often, pronunciation. Words that might otherwise be misread, such as re-creation or co-op, should be hyphenated. Hyphens can also eliminate ambiguity. For example, the hyphen in much-needed clothing shows that the clothing is greatly needed rather than abundant and needed. Where no ambiguity could result, as in public welfare administration or graduate student housing, hyphenation is unnecessary.
- And summarizing [8.159], when talking about hyphenated elements in a "Title Case Sentence".... the second element is supposed to be capitalized unless it's an article, preposition, conjunction, or if the FIRST element can't stand on its own (eg Anti-intellectual, anti can't stand on its own so the second element is NOT capitalized).
So, long story short, if you want to go for technical correctness, the second element should always be capitalized. Since that is not how we have chosen to work here (and there are hundreds or thousands of pages done the lotro-wiki way), it will just have to be a vote, or an executive decision by Lotroadmin, on what everyone prefers: stick with the lotro-wiki method (first part cap, second part not) or stick religiously to the way it's capitalized in the game. -Adelas (talk) 18:18, 27 October 2011 (EDT)
- Expect a short, and get a long, answer. That was great! So, despite Turbine's inconsistencies, we should do it in a consistent lotro-wiki way. It would be great if someone summarized this on the help pages, so the new and forgetful will know the right way. RingTailCat (talk) 18:46, 27 October 2011 (EDT)
- Yesterday it became summarized at Help:Names#Exceptions. However, I am absolutely unbiased. We might have done a decision down the wrong path at some time, or maybe not. I am certainly not an English scholar. Tolkien was British and I assumed we tried to follow GB style, but if that contradict Chicago Manual if Style or not is beyond me, I don't think so to be honest. -- Zimoon 06:56, 28 October 2011 (EDT)
