Hildigar was the son of the 10th Chieftain of the Ai-thúda, Hildáric. His father died soon of a sudden illness at the age of 65, rumored to be from a poison. Hildigar's cousin Gundobad appeared at Hildáric's funeral to lay claim to the lordship, as Gundobad's father Gundáric had been lord before Hildáric, and had conceived Hildigar a few months before he was killed in Gundabad. Gundobad's claim was challenged in by Hildigar, who claimed inheritance of the current lord took presedence over Gundobad's older claim. The two fought for the right to rule the Ai-thúda, and in the end, Gundobad cut Hildigar down, taking back the rule over his people.
